Anguilla is the northernmost of the Leeward Islands, and is only 16 miles long and 3 miles across at its widest point. There is paved main road running from one end to the other, and renting a car is the best way to explore this island. Despite having a dry, flat terrain, here you will find gardens of orange bougainvillaea, pink oleander, and red hibiscus, as well as a variety of unusual birds, including the snowy egret and the great blue heron. May through September is their migration period and the best time to see the birds. Anguilla’s reputation is one of beautiful white beaches for beach-combing or snorkeling. Shoal Bay East is listed as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. A reef runs the entire length of this beach, making it a great spot for snorkellers at all levels of experience. Scuba divers can explore the offshore wrecks and reefs. You will find luxury resorts, and gourmet cuisine, ranging from Creole and Caribbean to Continental and American. Boat racing is popular in Anguilla. Boat Race Week and Carnival are held in August, amidst barbecues, music and dancing. The capital of Anguilla is The Valley, and it is located in the centre of the island. Here you will find Wallblake House, a fine example of 18th century colonial architecture, and St. Gerard’s Catholic Church, with its unique architectural style. |
