Parrot Nest Lodge - Belize Hotels

Parrot Nest LodgeNot Rated
Location: Cayo
Rooms: The Parrot Nest Lodge consists of several huts with thatched roofs that sit on 12 foot stilts amongst huge guanacaste trees in a 5 acre tropical plant just outside of San Ignacio in Belize. The lodge has one en-suite room and the rest share the ground floor open-air bathrooms that are very clean, but often house surprise insect visitors that you might not want to see in the shower.
Description from resort website:
The lodge, which is on the banks of the Mopan River, is surrounded by wildlife, especially parrots (hence the name) and over a hundred other types of birds. If bird-watching is not for you, you can also expect to see Coatis, agoutis, otters and giant iguanas and all number of aquatic life as you take a cool dip in the clear waters of the river. Tours can also be arranged with the hotel to explore the local surroundings. Despite all the wildlife surrounding the hotel, it’s probably in your room where you will get the most up close and personal with the insects of the jungle. The hotel claims that mosquitoes are not a problem, but judging from the mosquito nets and the sliding screen doors in the laundry-fresh smelling rooms, you should definitely come prepared with insect repellent, and some ear plugs for the dawn chorus.

Parrot Nest Lodge Lee ~ Sarnia, Ontario, Canada

May 2009

April 30 - May 5

Parrot Nest Lodge is a secluded jungle experience but only 3 miles away from San Ignacio. The sounds of nature will greet you first thing in the morning and last thing at night. The Lodge is rustic, so if you are a 5 star accommodation kind of person, you may want to look elsewhere. You may find the occasional gecko or insect in your room, or one of the resident cats or dogs sleeping on your porch.

The 6 cabins are located on the property adjacent to the Mopan River. The owners, Theo and Marcus, are wonderful hosts and Parrot Nest will feel like home to you very quickly. We stayed in Cabin # 6 which is the only cabin with a private bathroom. The bathroom is actually just outside the main cabin and on the back deck. Our cabin had 2 double beds, 2 chairs and a sink inside. There was always a nice breeze and we were comfortable even in the heat. There was a hammock on the back deck also. The other cabins share 2 bathrooms and 2 showers. The Mopan river is right in the backyard, so you can enjoy a refreshing swim, or go river tubing with Marcus. This was a great experience – a way to chill while listening to the river and the birds.

Breakfast and dinners are served at Parrot Nest and Theo is a fabulous cook. All of her meals were made with fresh local ingredients and herbs. We had delicious omelettes for breakfast (there are several other choices available) and dinners were fish, shrimp, enchiladas and chicken while we were there, with delicious salad & homemade dressing, rice or pasta, vegetables and dessert. . Theo’s portions are very generous, so you certainly will not go hungry. Tea, coffee and water are included at all times and the “honour fridge” contains a variety of sodas and beer.

We went into town daily for lunch, shopping and wandering around. We found several very good restaurants in San Ignacio (Hannah’s, Martha’s, Pops (serves breakfast all day), Mencho’s little “hole in the wall” that has great fresh juices beside Hannah’s, Serendib, Amore Mio and Eva's) The fruit & vegetable market is set up daily in town, and on Saturdays, there are many vendors selling food (tamales & papusas, etc.), fish, meat, clothing, etc. The market is a great experience.

There are collectivo taxis available down the road from the Lodge,or you can get a ride into town, if Theo or Marcus are going in to San Ignacio. A Bullet Tree collectivo taxi back from town was only $5 US for 2 people. There are one or two restaurants down the road from Parrot Nest, but we didn’t get a chance to try them, or get an idea of their business hours. Theo and Marcus are very informative about local tours and guides and can recommend a good choice for you depending on your preference. .

We used William’s Shuttle for our airport transfers and would highly recommend him. We found William to be very professional, courteous and most personable. He is very knowledgeable about the area also and is a very good source of information. We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing time at Parrot Nest Lodge and would definitely return again.
