Fairmont SouthhamptonErin K ~ New Brunswick
March 2007

I visited Bermuda Feb 22, 2007 to accompany my boyfriend on a business trip. The temperature was between 12C-19C. The ocean was too cold for me to venture in and it was very windy and cloudy the whole time we were there. Since it was off season, some of the usual tourist attractions and restaurants were not open.

The Fairmont Southhampton is towards the east end of the Island and the airport is on the west end. It was about a 30 minute drive from the airport and about 20 minutes from the city of Hamilton. The Hotel was very expensive and they automatically add 15% gratuity to your bill, plus room tax, room levy and some other taxes I have never heard of. The hotel had several different restaurants but some of them were closed for the season, some of them required reservations and others required jacket and tie. We had a hard time finding a place to eat for casual wear. We had to resort to using room service a couple times which took 1.5 hours to arrive. There are not any restaurants within walking distance, so we kind of felt stranded without a place to eat. The food at the hotel was very expensive. Buffet breakfast was $57.50 US for 2 people and dinners weren’t any cheaper.

The rooms were very nice with great views. Ocean on one side and ocean on the other side so you can’t really get stuck with a bad view. The staff were all very friendly and always stopped to say “good morning or good afternoon”.

The hotel has a trolley that will drive you down to the dock where you can catch the complimentary ferry to the sister resort in Hamilton. It was only running one day the whole time we were there because of the wind.

The hotel also has a beach club which is a 10 minute walk from the hotel, so the trolley will also drive you there. The beach club is actually a secluded bay area with soft pink sand, beautiful blue green water and lava rock off in the distance. There was a beach bar & grill that serves drinks and snacks, a restaurant that was closed for the season, a tennis club, some shops that were closed for the season, change rooms and bathrooms.

The hotel has its own golf course and there are several other golf courses on the island. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel during the off season, since many of the restaurants and shops are closed during the season and you feel very cut off from the rest of the island. The beaches are all very beautiful and I am sure if I had visited during the summer season, I would have had a better experience.
