| Montana de Fuego | John and Family of 4 ~ Wilmington, NC, USA |
August 2005
Our family of 5 spent the first two nights of our Costa Rica vacation at the Montana de Fuego resort, which is at the base of Arenal Volcano. The rooms are actually rustic cabins with fantastic views of the volcano. We rented two units, one for us parents and one for the 3 kids. The folks who run the resort were extremly helpful and cheerful. Each room had air conditioning, TV and phone service, which made it all that much more comfortable for us. The pool was very nice and included a jacuzzi. While there, we booked a canopy tour directly with the tour company. The tour is a thrilling run, very high above the jungle. If your nervous with heights, you may rethink it. The kids loved it. We also enjoyed the hot springs (don't miss this) and had a very nice, inexpensive meal in the local town "La Fortuna". Although we did not do this, you may want to consider renting a car so that you can spin around the other side of the volcano to see lava flows and Arenal Lake. The volcano did erupt several times while we where there and booms and smoke were visible from the resort. Also, I enjoyed watching the many humming birds and other exotic birds visiting the resort. Overall, I rate the Montana de Fuego a 4 star resort and highly recommend you stay for 3 nights so as to take in all the sights.
