Arrival:
The Atlantico Hotel is ideally situated if you are interested in visiting Havana. Its proximity to this historical city was the main reason for choosing it.
Rooms:
If you are expecting the royal suite then this hotel is not for you. The rooms were clean but minimal. The rooms are a fair size complete with satellite T.V., bath tub and shower, a nice view of the azure blue ocean and balcony. Ask for a room in the newer part of the hotel - even though it is not that new, however all we needed the room for was for sleeping and showering because during the day we were either at the beach, in the city (Havana) or at one of the Hotel's restaurants restaurants or bars. The chamber maid (camerena) that we had was extremely service oriented as were the rest of the staff - remember to tip them as they will pay more attention to you.
Restaurants and Bars:
The buffet had a variety of salads and featured either pork or chicken with fish and some days all three. The deserts were delicious.
There were three other restaurants within the facility one of which overlooks the 5 star beach. Reservations were required for the restaurants but not for the buffet which We preferred because of the variety.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The beach is the best in the area and one of the best in Cuba.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
We participatted in Aqua Gym, Dancing lessons and in the Cuba Day festivities on the beach. Although the nightly entertainment was of good quality - an array of dancing and singing - we did pay for a cabaret show at the Nacional Hotel in Havana which included a buffet dinner and two cocktails at this 5 star hotel in the city.
Other Comments:
If you want to see Havana as part of your stay in Cuba the Atlantico includes a free shuttle to the city three times a day and this makes the stay here worthwhile and it is easy to overcome this older hotel resort.
We found the staff to be very friendly, the beach was excellent, the food and rooms satisfactory as our expectations were realistic for this 3 star resort near Havana. We would go back.

September 2009
Arrival: 09-08-2009 till 09-15-2009
We arrived at the hotel, the bus let us off in the middle of the street, we went to the front desk to check in, this was are honeymoon, the guys give us a room, we go to the room and believe it or not they gave us two single beds, the bathtub was disgusting paint missing, and mould growing on the silicone. We were to get a honeymoon suite, there are no honeymoon suites in the hotel. We where to get a bottle of rum and fruit basket, I had to ask for it and we received a bottle of sparkling wine and a plate of cut fruit, what a joke.
Restaurants and Bars:
The food at the buffet was not good at all, most of all the meat was very tough and it was the same thing everyday
.
We went to the fancy dining room we had the grilled chicken meal. There was blood on the bones, was not cooked all the way through. One morning we went for breakfast, most of the buffet was empty, so I said to my wife I'll just have toast she goes and make the toast and looks for the butter, no ore she asks for more to the cook and tells her theres no more. She leaves the taost there in front of the cook and tells him to f... off. The waiter comes to are table and asks whats wrong, we tell him and he goes in the back and gets some, unreal upsetting honeymoon. We will never ever go back to this hotel, the food really sucked.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The beach was very nice at this hotel, the pool well the best to discribe the pool is its fit for the crabes and fish, algae growing in it very cloudy water, the filter was not working at all.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
We had a bit of entertainment, some band blowing horns and harp and guitar during the supper hour, there was not even music playing in the bars. There was a bingo game one day, bingo now really. Then there was some dancing lessons like four people were involved.
Other Comments:
They say it was a seven day holiday we lost two days in travel so its really a five day nightmare at this hotel and travel with Sunwing Airlines. Also on the weekend we had all the Cubans come to the hotel and invade the food buffet and bars and were better served than us, we also were not responded to very many times to in English, mostly Cuban. Sunwing Airlines, very disappointing and will never travel with them again
to many promises and we did not get what was promised.

Sunwing Vacations
The Hotel Atlántico is best suited for the budget traveler wishing easy access to Havana from an all-Inclusive beach resort. This hotel is located directly on the Santa Maria Del Mar beach, and has a free shuttle service into old Havana three times a day. Because of this great shuttle service, we spent most mornings in Havana and the hot afternoons back at the hotel, enjoying the beach and ocean - As much as we enjoyed exploring Havana, it was nice to take a break from the heat, pollution, noise, pestering locals, etc. This hotel was a great retreat as the Playas Del Este area is quieter than chaotic Havana, and the proximity of the ocean is a major plus. We witnessed many tourist coming from Havana by bus to use the Playas Del Este beaches, as the Havana hotels have no beaches, only pools.
Apart from the wonderful beach, this hotel is bare-bones basic - we often referred to it as the Y as in YMCA. I would rate this hotel as a former 3 star property, needing renovations. However, we found it adequate for our main purpose - spending as much time as possible in Havana. Because of the Atlántico's location on the beach, almost every room has a partial view of the ocean, as well as the buffet and terrace bar areas. To the left or right of the hotel are the public beaches, which could become very busy. But the beach directly in front of the hotel was generally quiet, except for the hotel's Cuban music, which was playing most of the time. The guest at the hotel were a mix of Quebecers, Italians, Germans, and a few English speaking people mostly from the Toronto area. As far as the jineteras situation in the Playas Del Este area, it was evident at the Atlántico, although not as evident as it was at the Tropicoco Hotel down the street, where the young girls were lined up on the sidewalk after dark. Perception being reality, some guest noticed these events taking place and others didn't.
Despite the big city realities, we enjoyed our trip, mostly because of the wonderful Cuban weather - 14 days of clear blue sky and 30 plus temperatures, as well as fresh breezes - those fresh breezes were especially appreciated in exhaust choked Havana. As much as we enjoyed this vacation, we would not return to the Atlántico or Havana as we prefer trying new places. I would recommend this resort if your expectations are not too high of either the Atlántico or Havana - you may want to read a Havana travel guidebook before considering this option. If you go, take the time to have a cappuccino at the Hotel Parque Central at the end of Calle Obispo - they have a very nice lobby, and very clean washrooms. If you have more time, do the same at the Hotel Nacional in Vedado, they have a beautiful patio. The Hotel Parque Central also has a nice rooftop patio that is worth visiting - a great place to wash down the Havana dust with a cold mojito.
