I stayed here for several nights following my arrival in Cuba. There is some construction work going on but this didn't unduly affect me. The staff are all nice and polite. The pool is really good as is the pool bar. Good breakfast.

Arrival:
Check in very easy.

Rooms:
Fairly basic but sufficient.

Restaurants and Bars:
I enjoyed the pool bar.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Pool very good. Bus service to Guardalavaca beach Sats and Suns in July and August for bargain price of 5 CUC return.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
Fairly long walk to Central Holguin but taxis alays available for 3 CUC/USD.

Other Comments:
Very handy for the airport. Also a calling point for the bus between Havana and Santiago de Cuba in each direction.

If your not looking for 5 star luxury then the Pernik offers great value for money. The hotel not situated right in the centre is only a 25 minute walk to the Central Square, or take a bici-taxi for 1 1/2 cuc. Overall this Hotel offers basic accommodation at great value for money.

Room Number:
365

Arrival:
Check-in was easy, if you book by email have a spare copy of your reservation as Reception need one for their paperwork!

Rooms:
The room I stayed in had recently been refurbished and was clean. Not all rooms have balcony's and it's worth asking for one with one. There is a/c although I did not use it really as in the winter they don't get that hot. The bathrooms have only showers and you have to get your timing right for the hot water, mornings were ok, but it never seemed to get hot before 6pm.

Restaurants and Bars:
Breakfast was included in my stay and was adequate. There is a bar and snack bar area by the pool with a limited menu but again is adequate. Service as with most government run hotels and restaurants can be very hit and miss. They do offer an evening buffet for 12 cuc per person, but again don't expect fancy menus.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The pool area had a mixture of old and new sunbeds, with music. The pool was clean. The grounds are fairly well maintained.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
If you are planning to hire a car there is a place at the entrance to the hotel, but my advice is book in advance as they never seem to know when they are going to have a car!

Other Comments:
The great benefit of this hotel is that if you want a the real Cuban experience of some great evenings out with the locals in the central square then this is perfect. You only ever get what you pay for in this world so although it's basic and clean this hotel isn't the Ritz, but don't let that put you off, as value for money it comes out 5 star. Things have changed in Cuba and now you will find a few more private local restaurants and these offer great value for money and good food. Try the restaurant 1910 at 143 Calle Martires in the central area. Go hungry as the portions are large. Also the best Mojitos you've tasted!

I have stayed at Hotel Pernik every time I visit Cuba. The rooms are comfortable will all the necessary amenities. I wish they would invest in a wireless at least for the Lobby. They do have a computer center where one can connect to the internet. The buffet breakfast was adequate with eggs made to order, however you want them. The staff have always been pleasant. During the day a Bici-Taxi is always available across the street if you are adventuresome. Auto-Taxis are available upon request, sometimes they are waiting outside the door. The pool is clean and the area around it well equipped for a relaxing time in the sun. There are waiters to serve you whatever you might need. For the price, you can't find a better value in Holguin.

Hotel Pernik won a major architectural award, for its modern design when opened in 1990, and offers remodeled, updated, comfortable rooms, wide hallways, a generous lobby. Situated on a small hill, near spacious Plaza de la Revolucion, the Pernik benefits from its quiet surroundings and is well away from the heat and activity of the downtown. Lovely bouquets of fresh cut flowers including roses(pernik)are about the lobby and main restaurant.
Services include: 110 V outlet in rooms-handy for North American travellers to recharge batteries; a Cadeca for money conversion and purchase with credit card, this is a real plus; a pool of near Olympic size with towel service; internet (note: internet throughtout Cuba at this point in time Feb/12 is slow 56K, making upload to web largely impossible;) a poolside bar/barbecue; a cosy bar; a small restaurant; and the larger buffet restaurant. Breakfasts (included) are generous, varied to Cuban culinary tastes,a chef will prepare an omelette/you choose the ingredients.
Taxi(5 cuc) and bici-taxi(2 cuc)are stationed outside, another advantage, & take you to the downtown Parque Calixto Garcia in about ten minutes. In my view the bi-ci bicyle is the more interesting because the driver takes side streets and the ride becomes a tour in seeing the daily life of the community.
Holquin itself is limited in the nature of historical sites, or architecture - a half day can be adequate (this is my view based on two visits, and some guide books agree). The town is a suitable start and end point for visiting Camaguey, and Santiago de Cuba (both worth four days)and for heading to the all inclusive resorts at Guardalavaca. Viazul bus station is near and just off Parque C. Garcia is a fine Islazul tourist office to handle reservations. Reservation of hotels is recommeneded based on my own experience and comments from other travellors.

Room Number:
426 and 218 on two different occasions

Arrival:
January and again in February, 2012
