Santo Domingo, already famous for its unique history, is showing off its ambition to become a culinary hotspot in the Caribbean. As a part of the 2010 Santo Domingo American Capital of Culture event, 30 restaurants are offering a special menu around the theme Rum and Cigars.

According to the organizers of “the Grand Gastronomic Circuit”, at least 250 new Dominican dishes have been created. Trying them all would be close to impossible. I noticed that this event perhaps hints a little to the taste of gentleman. Therefore I am all the more curious about what the chefs can come up with! Let me know ladies! :)

Lodewijk Bröcker, the owner of one of the participating venues, Restaurant Pat’e Palo, told me a few months ago about this “Grand Gastronomic Circuit” project, his role in promoting the Zona Kolonial and making one of the most prominent restaurant zones in Santo Domingo, Plaza España, even more appealing. Improved lightning, a sound stage where people can enjoy free concerts by fantastic Dominican artist and more areas where people can relax under the palm trees… I have seen various initiatives gradually come to light and I must say that I am impressed.

It looks that this culinary event is here to stay! Santo Domingo’s bar and restaurant owners do have a perfect understanding that investing in Santo Domingo and the Zona Colonial benefits all aspects related to this fabulous city. Tourists will surely be surprised by the positive developments and feel encouraged to return, like I will!

One thing for sure, when you in Santo Domingo from Monday, January 10th through Thursday, January 20th, it will be extra fun to shop for a restaurant to find the most creative chef and the most delicious dish.

Rum and Cigars and the first Colonial City, how much more Dominican could it get! New Dominican cuisine it is called. Can’t wait to try it. :)
