From Playa del Carmen and the rest of the coast there are tours available at the local tour agencies to all major tourist attractions like the Maya ruins and nature parks such as Xcaret & Xel-Ha.
The island Cozumel is half an hour away by ferry from Playa del Carmen but not recommended for just a day trip unless you only want to shop.
There's only one highway along the Mayan Riviera coast, so you can't get lost, driving isn’t difficult here. But you can also take the local bus for a few pesos.
