Luperon, Dominican Republic

Luperón
Luperón, a small seaside town on the North West coast of the Dominican Republic is perhaps best known for the Puerto Blanca Marina and its natural harbor that serves as a perfect shelter during the peak of the hurricane season (September). I met various boaters who liked Luperón so much that they decided to stay for years. This friendly town does not have the grand allure of a place like Puerto Plata but benefits from being the closest town to La Isabela National Park, the site of the first settlement in the New World. As an alternative to the all-inclusive Tropical Luperón and Luperón Beach resorts, you can choose to stay at one of many small hotels or more basic pensions. more...

Luperon Information

Luperón bay, originally named Bahia de Gracia by Christopher Columbus, is surrounded by green hills that create a natural safe-harbor during the hurricane season for boaters who are cruising the Caribbean. The adjoining town with narrow streets, where people compete with Moto Conchos, chickens and mules for the right of way, has all the basic facilities you might need. Most people in Luperón live in modest, colorful wooden houses and still make their money with fishing and farming related activities.

Luperón has a typical Dominican white-sand beach and is not too crowded. The Puerto Blanca Marina is a great place to meet the cruisers and organizes lots of events ranging from Spanish paella dinners to Merengue nights. The main nearby tourist attraction is without a doubt La Isabela National Park, the site of the first settlement in the New World.

There is a good possibility that you will be staying at the Tropical Luperón or Luperón Beach all-inclusive resort and need to check your e-mail at some point. Consider the Internet café in the village of Luperón and safe some money!

When it comes to food, I like Laisa's “El Tipico” chicken shack and Steve's Place, which offers great “gringo” food. Luperón is the kind of community where people still know their neighbors and watch out for one another. The town and its wonderful people soon make you feel right at home and chances are you want to stay longer than planned.

How to get there
The closest airport to Luperón is Gregorio Luperón International Airport near Puerto Plata. From here it is easy to take a bus, airport shuttle, rental car or taxi to Luperón (44 km). Santiago's Cibao International Airport is located about an hour south from Puerto Plata.

Tours and excursion
I initially chose to visit Luperón because its proximity to La Isabela National Park (14 kilometers west of Luperón), the site of the first settlement in the New World. Here you can visit the remains of what is believed to be the church where the first mass in the New World was given.

One of the most exciting eco-adventure activities that can be enjoyed in the Dominican Republic is said to be Salto del Río 27 Charcos (the 27 waterfalls of the Damajagua river), located near the town of Imbert about 22 kilometers southwest of Puerto Plata. Because this strenuous excursion can be rather dangerous, I strongly recommend that you book this excursion only with a renowned eco-adventure company like Iguana Mama.

Ocean World Park, located just 25 km from Luperón and just outside Puerto Plata is a zoo and marine park that features a dolphin lagoon, aquarium, shark pool, sea lions and tiger feeding area.

Water sports available in Luperón are scuba diving, windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking. Deep-sea fishing and sailboat trips depart from the marina.
