Playa Dorada, the holiday village on the north coast of the Dominican Republic that neighbors Puerto Plata, is perfect for people who are looking for a safe place to take the whole family for a fun, water, beach and sun vacation. I enjoyed Playa Dorada immensely for its endless golden sand beaches with hundreds of swaying palm trees and the Playa Dorada Plaza shopping mall, with fun shops, a cinema and a marvelous bar where after a hard day of shopping it is great to sit down with a beer and an order of Buffalo wings. The Playa Dorada Golf Club is sheer heaven for golfers. I believe that Playa Dorada does lack some Dominican authenticity, which can be easily found in the (nearby) north coast destinations Cabarete and Sosua. more...
Playa Dorado, consisting out of approximately 12 all-inclusive resorts, is located 5 km east of Puerto Plata and attracts the largest number of all-inclusive resort tourists to the north coast of the Dominican Republic. I stayed in the Grand Paradise Playa Dorada resort for three days and can tell you that the beaches of Playa Dorada are absolutely gorgeous while the view over the bay is equally impressive. If it is an immaculate beach you are after, Playa Dorada surely is the right place for you. It is perfectly possible to spend your entire vacation without leaving the Playa Dorado resort since everything you need is taken care off except perhaps the sense of being in an authentic part of the Dominican Republic.
In order to see and experience something of the real Dominican Republic you will need to leave the secluded resort town with entrance gates at both sides. I can warmly recommend a day trip to Sosua, one of my favorite places to mingle with the locals and to get a sense of daily life on this fabulous Caribbean island. While soaking up some sun on the Grand Paradise Playa Dorada beach, I met Carlos who sells excursions at an often much better rate than the friendly people at your all-inclusive resorts excursion desk. Carlos is being mentioned in various reviews on the Debbie websites and I have met some of his very satisfied customers. For more “tailor-made” tours and transfers I recommend Asaira Tours operated by the very dependable Martin Espinal Golf enthusiasts cannot pass up visiting the Playa Dorada Golf Club. Here it becomes perfectly clear why the Dominican Republic is considered to be the prime golf destination of the Caribbean. The restaurant bar with a fabulous view over the golf course got me settled in a luxury mood and prompted me to decide to have lunch at the finest restaurant in the region, Casa Colonial.

How to get there
The most convenient airport to fly into is Gregorio Luperón International Airport near Puerto Plata. From here it takes just a few minutes to get to Playa Dorada. Santiago's Cibao International Airport is situated about an hour south from Puerto Plata.

Tours and excursions
Playa Dorada is home to the world famous Playa Dorada Golf Course. In and around Playa Dorada and Puerto Plata there are countless excursions companies who will love to welcome you as their guest like Outback Safari and Yasika tours that offers exciting zip line adventures. Carlos who has a license to sell excursions on the Grand Paradise Playa Dorada and Martin Espinal both are professionals I gladly endorse. Ocean World Marine & Water Park is the main theme park attraction in the area. There are many great beach towns on the north coast of the Dominican Republic like Sosua that can easily be visited in a day and will serve up a much more authentic Dominican experience.
