Caribbean Disability Travel Information Reviews
- If possible, always go to the same travel agency. After some time they know you and know your wishes
- Book a larger hotel or resort from a well-known hotel chain. Not for luxury but often they are better prepared for guests with a disability than the cozy little hostel at the corner.
- Make sure your wheelchair is in good condition. Before you leave let it get checked by a professional
- Put your name and address on your wheelchair and all removable parts
- Take along a small set of sticky tape
- Tell the airline company in advance you have a disability and a wheelchair. Better spam them three times too often than one time too many
- Ask them to reconfirm the maximum assistance and do it again at the check in desk before flying.
- If you give your wheelchair to the cabin crew, remove all detachable parts before they get lost. Put these parts in a sports-bag
- If you have an electric wheelchair you must make sure you have a gel battery or dry cell battery. Wet cell batteries must be removed from the wheelchair because of possible leakage
- Protect the vulnerable parts of your wheelchair. If possible, remove protruding parts. The staff is not always as careful as you are. You will minimize the chances something gets broken or lost

the hotel is situated on a nice clean beach. Buildings are not in good conditions. The food is not good. For fruits the choice is limitaded or available if you pay some extra pesetas. The Management is incompetent, unskilled and unfriendly. Even you have to leave the hotel in the late afternoon, you must quite the room at 12 a.m. or you have to pay 25 $ extra. The responsible for Custumer relation, Mr. Romelio was not able to find a solution. We never had lived in such a bad managed hotel.
So, it is better to choice anther hotel.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
the hotel is far from the Varadero Center. So there are not many Possibilities for other activities. We made a Trip by car arround the island of cuba.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Beach ist exellent, The pools not so clean because Cubans trunk and eat in the pools
Other Comments
It is better to choice another hotel in Varadero.
Restaurants and Bars
The buffet was ok, the quality of the food very low, not so many fruits available, mostly for expl. there where Mangos available if you we spent some Pesos extra. A lot of Cuba Guests have drunken and eaten in the pool.
Rooms
old fashioned rooms, bathroom more or less clean,

I arrived at this resort and found out my wallet had fallen out of my carry-on luggage on the aircraft. The desk manager Tony Braun was extremely helpful and spent a long time helping me locate it. The staff were very friendly and helpful and were cheerful and extremely hard working. The resort was spotless.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
The catamarans, hobie cats were a great time to sail and if you used one it was a good workout with the wind and waves. I thoroughly enjoyed them thanks to Pancho's excellant service. It is too bad all were not servicable, as it would have been a lot more fun to have others to sail with.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Pools were great, swim up bar was awesome thanks to Jesse, Tere (Happy Birthday) and of course Manual, the entertainer. The grounds around the resort and pool areas were kept pristine at all times, the only thing I noticed was one afternoon there was a huge mess on the beach, probably due to a lack of security guards ensuring people used the garbage containers.
Other Comments
Out of all the resorts I have stayed at in Dominican & Mexico this one is the best one for the price charged and the service, food and general resort shape, activities and entertainment. I would definitely stay at this resort again, and would recommend it
Restaurants and Bars
Restaurants, were reasonable, the food was good, with a good selection of variety, although one may get tired of the sausages floating in grease, in general it was the best of the resorts I have stayed at. The specialty restaurants were from good to excellant, especially Sir Georges with really great food. The asian was westernized more than any oriental restaurant, but still featured good tasting food.
Rooms
Someone made a comment about the beds being hard. Yes they are firm mattresses but reasonable to sleep on and not worn out like other resorts that I had stayed at. The room was fully stocked with a bar fridge with bottled water, beer and beverages as well as a liquor cabinet with dispensers for it. The cleaning staff were extremely hard working and never once overlooked anything in the room.
Your Arrival
I checked in with no problem whatsoever, the majority of the clientèle of the resort were Mexican nationals, which is totally understandable at this time of the year. I was always treated with respect and courtesy, and made to feel welcome as a guest of the resort.

My wife and I departed from Ottawa,Canada on March 20th,2010 and stayed at the Melia Caribe for 2 weeks.
Our flight was very good with Canjet and we arrived at the resort at 11:30 in the morning.
No problems checking in as everone was very friendly and very helpful. Our room was indeed ready by 3 p.m. and our luggage was brought to the room before we could get in.We ended up at the Market Place restaurant for lunch and they had a very good assortment of food for everyone's taste.Food was excellent, well cooked and presented in a very distinctive fashion.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
Golf course near by was very good.I was picked up every morning at 6:35 for my 7:00 tee-off time.
Worth the 37 dollars american for the power cart, very nice and challenging 27 hole course.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Pool was cleaned daily, grounds are very nice and tidy.beach was cleaned every morning from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Other Comments
This resort is definitely a 4 and 3 quarter star in our books.
We will more than likely go back in the near future.
Restaurants and Bars
Restaurants are very nice and have a good assortment for everyone including families with young children.
We met Julio and Johnny at the Avenue bar and they treated us like royalty. of the best bartenders that I have encountered on all of our trips. They both make GREAT mohitos.
Rooms
Rooms were very clean with lots of hot running water for the shower.
Safe in the room is a nice added touch But should be included in the price. It was worth the 28 dollar charge though for the 2 weeks.
Your Arrival
Well greeted at the airport,no problems finding our transportation to the hotel.
Check in was a breeze, people were very helpful and friendly

Overall for the price we paid we were very pleased with NH Real. We booked "Le Mirage" through transat holidays with our Travel Agent at tripcentral in Bedford, NS. Didn't see the need to upgrade to "Conceirge". Although we would upgrade to the NH Royal (adults only) if we return here. We are a married couple, aged 50 & 55. This trip was all about rest & relaxation. I booked NH Real because the beach and rooms sounded great (and they were). Here is our detailed review of the NH Real Arena:
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We didn't take any tours this trip. We only went for rest & relaxation this time. Shopping is an adventure in itself here. The prices at the hotel gift shop are very expensive. One small tube of sunscreen = $26 us. Thankfully, we bought plenty from home.
We did want to purchase coffee and rum to take home and I found directions on the internet (can't remember where from originally) to the Supermarcado behind Captian Cook's restaurant in Cortecito. Overall their prices were about half of what the hotel gift shop wanted. We bought 6 large bags of Santo Domingo coffe @ 105 pesos each (hotel price 300) The best Dominican Rum 368 pesos (hotel price 575) Pringles 86 pesos (hotel price 150) Overall our shopping cost us $55.00 us for everything. Hotel shop would have charged us over $100 us for the same purchases.
To find the supermarket....looking out at the ocean, turn left. The walk is about 25-35 minutes down the beach. Go past the restaurant that sticks out in the water about another 5 minutes...watch for Captain Cook sign. Turn in right beside Captain Cooks and walk through the alley. Be careful crossing a small paved road, as there are lots of motorbikes. The doors to the supermarket are right there. You should see a few metal carts outside the door. It is a real grocery store with set prices.
The vendors along the way are very persistant! Be firm but polite. Don't believe what they tell you! We mistakenly told them we were looking for the Supermarcado....and twice we were told that they was no supermarcado up there and we could buy from them...ha ha ha!
As for the entertainment....we have no comment on this aspect of the trip. We never saw one show. We were usually in our room by 9:30-10:00. The shows didn't start until 9:45. Didn't use the Tantrah Bar upstairs either.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The beach...the reason we chose this resort...and it is gorgeous. We love to take long walks and this fit the bill perfectly. Waves not too big, soft white sand, no rocks. I love this beach.
Yes...the towel game is in 'full-force' here. There were a couple mornings that you still could get chairs at around 8:30-9:00 but most mornings we had to get up around 6 and claim our palapa. Then back to the room for an early coffee on the patio...breakfast at 7:00...then hit the beach for the day. There are not as many palm trees on this area of beach so the palapas provide the most shade. We only encountered a problem on one day when a family of 5 parked themselves under our palapa. They never moved or touched our chairs..they just decided to squeeze under with us....we said "Hello" but got absolutely no response from either him or her. They just turned their heads away from us and kept talking in French. I thought "Hello" was a fairly universal word! We have galdly shared our shade before but were asked first. To be totally ignored I thought was a deliberate insult to my husband and myself. Yes...we ended up moving. It was just too darned uncomfortable and weird to stay there with them.
The pool wasn't used much by us since we're beach people. I found it a bit too noisy and too many kids. Very hard to get a chair with shade at the pool. I didn't even try.
The grounds are very nice. A few more years will see the plants and shrubs mature and more flowering vines. Overall very tidy, clean grounds. One suggestion would be for the resort to provide a few benches or seating areas around the grounds. We enjoyed a stroll every evening but found nowhere to sit and jusy enjoy the atmosphere. We didn't like sitting in the central courtyard because it smells of smoke from cigarettes eventhough it is open air, it is enclosed on all four sides by the buildings.
One afternoon we watched a maintenance worker scrub the beach rocks around the base of the palm trees by hand. He had a wheelbarrow with soapy water in it and a scrub brush...we went to the bar and got him two cold drinks. Smiles & handshakes were exchanged and we wondered what he'd make of our 'gas powered high-pressure washer' at home!
Other Comments
I must mention the service at this hotel...we were very impressed with the level of service we received. We thought it was the best we have ever had at any resort we've been to.
We never felt any pressure to tip however we did when we felt it was appropriate.
Being a 'curious' person I wandered over to the NH Royal one day and had a walk around their pool area. I didn't know that I wasn't allowed. I just wandered by and entered the property. The swimming pool is fantastic! It is a lazy river type. The lower level rooms all have sun lougers outside their patio doors right on the edge of the pool. It's almost like having a swim-out room. It's nice & quite, adults only and you have access to all the NH Real facilities & restaurants. And no kids allowed the Royal beach.
If we go back to this resort it would be to the Royal section for sure.
Restaurants and Bars
We mostly used the Festival Buffet for our meals. Selection was quite good. Yummy omelets for breakfast. Lots of fresh fruit available at all mealtimes. I was pleased to see plenty of salad veggies. Usually had 2 types of lettuce, arugula, ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded carrtots & beets, onions etc.
Carving stations had turkey, fish, ham etc. Had grilled shrimp a few times. They had nice stuffed baked potatoes one night. Lots of hot vegetables.
We thought the bread was very good. Nice dessert selection and ice cream. The service in the buffet was very good. But we found the staff very friendly and helpful.
We usually lunched at the Beach Restaurant. They have a large BBQ grill set up everyday outside offering chicken, beef, fish, fried rice etc. Inside they have hamburgers, hot dogs, assorted meats, veggies, salad & desserts. It is best to go early when they open at noon...it is hard to find a table at around 2 when it is busiest. Somedays I just made up hamburgers and wrapped them in napkins to take back to our beach chairs.
We only booked 2 a la carte restaurants. The Shore Grill - fair-good. We had the shrimp wrapped in bacon and the ribeye. The meal starts with an appetizer of nachos & a few chicken wings. Tasted ok but never warmer than room temperature. Other folks we talked to said the same. I think they must prepare them ahead of time and just serve them 'as is'. Then came a ceasar salad...good but had at least qtr. cup of dressing poured on top of it. Even asked for dressing 'on the side' but still received the salad the same way.
The shrimps were good but the ribeye was quite fatty. It tasted good...you just had to cut off all the fat first. It came with a baked potatoe.
Dessert was a small cheesecake topped with a brownie & white chocolate decoration....very good. There is definate room for improvement at the Shore Grill Restaurant.
Our second restaurant choice was the Asian-Tapanki - Good. We were seated at the cooking station and enjoyed the sushi, fried crispy onions & soup as an appetizer. The busboy was over-enthusiastic and absconded with my husbands soup and onions....we light-heartedly teased him when he returned and laughed it off. The main course was fried rice with egg & veggies, shrimp, chicken & beef...all good. We then were ushered to a large table for a dessert of fried ice cream. Overall we enjoyed this meal but felt a bit rushed. Although we understand the need to have the next seating on time...we felt that an offer of coffee with dessert would have been nice.
After speaking to a few of the staff...they suggested that the French restaurant, Senses offers the best meal of all, they recommend the beef tenderloin......have to remember if we go here again. Anyone should be able to find a decent meal at this buffet unless they are super-picky.
NH Real also has a sports bar that opens at 5pm (I think). It has a couple pool tables, popcorn machine & a bowling alley ($10 per game to bowl) And a few TV's.
Rooms
I had emailed the NH Real one week before we arrived requesting a poolview room. I never received a response back from them but we did get our poolview room. We were Room # 2143. The Punta Cana building, ground floor, Rm. 43. Very well appointed rooms with a nice big shower, separate toilet area with a frosted glass door, large whirlpool tub and the "infamous" hole-in-the-wall....it was a non-issue for us. I enjoyed soaking in the tub and watching TV at the same time. Adequate drawer & closet space. The safe is free. Iron came in handy twice. We did bring along extra hangers since you don't get many. We packed facecloths but they do have them....the maid finally gave us some after a few days.
Room had a king bed (very firm), 3 pillows, a small sofa, coffee table, armchair, bureau with 4 drawers, desk & chair, 2 nightstands with drawers.
We thought the rooms were spacious. There is a terrace outside. Rooms do have coffee makers. Mini fridge stocked daily with beer, Coke, Coke Lite, Sprite & water.
The only issue we had with our room was mosquitos coming in when housekeeping was cleaning. The slippers provided made a good flyswatter....lol! No big deal but I think an upper floor would be better!
Your Arrival
We departed Halifax on Friday April 2 at 6:45am on Canjet. Flight uneventful and arrived at PUJ airport on time. Passed in our Immigration cards and got our passports stamped at the airport counter, through security...then unto pick up our luggage. Wait wasn't very long. Boarded the bus and enjoyed the short daytime ride to resort (only 20 minutes).
The entrance to the resort is very plain and minimalistic. The inside lobby is quite dark with all of the dark colours and wood. Very Zen looking with incense burning most of the time. We rather liked it....the clean, open, spacious feel. If you like a rustic, jungle-type property....this isn't it.
Having booked "Le Mirage" we were able to access the private Paradise Club Lounge. We checked in there actually. They offer a small bar, coffee, water, soft drinks, fruit, sandwiches, snacks, a nice seating area, internet access and always had staff on hand to assist. We arrived around noon and our room wasn't ready, so we changed and headed to the beach...Wow! After a look around and a cold drink we checked on our room status again and it was ready at 1:00 for us...so off we went with the porter and our luggage.

The Dreams Riviera Cancun was a perfect blend of service, atmosphere and enjoyment. Yes there are children at this resort but we went as a couple knowing this and were able to still have a wonderful vacation.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
Lots of energy and activities if you wished to participate. Not overly agressive to gather people for events and the noise from them was never really annoying.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Beach was unfortunately not that great due to the weather during our stay. Winds were strong and had a storm front for a few days of our vacation.
Other Comments
Excellent service, attention to detail and memorable experience. Would highly recommend and we plan to return soon.
Restaurants and Bars
Food was excellent...we really enjoyed the Japanese and French. Plenty of bars to accomodate a thirst of any nature. Good selection of liquors availble.
Rooms
Exact replications of what they portray on their websites. We found them stunning and almost all have some sort of oceanview.
Your Arrival
Nice and close to the airport with about only a 30 minute drive.

April 11 to April 18/10 - beautiful resort, excellent service, great and friendly staff, all restaurants and buffet were excellent, cannot complain. Bars were quick and excellent. Travelled by Taxi to Havana one day - shared with another couple, worth every penny $220.00 Pesos. Arranged by Sunwing rep Manuella who was excellent. Also had a hour drive around Varadero in 1949 Convertible Cadillac - awesome! $32.00 Pesos also arranged by Manuella - Went to see the Bueno Vista Social Club (arranged by Manuella)
play at a concert hall 5 km. down the road, they play once a year and we struck it lucky, awesome and very very enjoyable and saw 2 of the original band members.
Loved Cuba, absolutely loved it, well worth the money. Beautiful beach and you can walk for miles, rooms were spacious, clean and kept orderly. Balcony on mostly every room, we over looked the green area towards the ocean. Ocean view was blocked by vegetation, but you can hear the waves. We stayed in a Premium suite, stocked fridge and bar daily :)
take a converter for your curl iron and battery charger etc. and a wash cloth, they don't supply this. Shampoo and bath gel and cream supplied. Hair dryer in bathroom along with magnifying mirror and iron and ironing board. Beds were very very comfortable.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Pool a busy place, but 3 on site, we tended to stay down at our quieter end. Ocean was rough, red flag everyday, but lovely, sand was clean.
Other Comments
Use your rep to book your trips off site, they are there to guide you and get you the right guide, it is well worth to ask questions if you want to go places.
Restaurants and Bars
fabulous - you won't be disappointed at any of them. We were not.
Rooms
spacious and clean and everything working
Your Arrival

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
Beach activities were abundant with 4 Hobie-Cats available and 5 paddle boats. Several sail boards were there but only one was used. Two Lasers were on the beach, but neither were available for use. Plenty of snorkeling equipment available for use.

Resort Activities Staff always seemed busy with one thing or another going on; archery and shooting, dance lessons, Spanish lessons, Bocce Ball, beach and pool volley ball, etc.

Off resort, we only took the bus to Guardalavaca and didn't take part in anything else organized.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
I should mention first that this resort was built with thoughts of someone physically challenged in mind with elevators and ramps as required. Someone in a wheelchair or walker can access anywhere on the resort I went from the entrance, to any of the restaurants and all the way to the beach.

In a word, the beach is fantastic. Yes, you should wear water socks to go close to or in the water, but that is probably a necessary price for the coral providing the great snorkeling so close to the shore.

Personally, I found "towel wars" non-existent here. Plenty of room and loungers for everyone. One morning at ~ 9:30, I counted 80 loungers still stacked and by 11:00 AM, still some left.

We didn't use the pool, but it looked clean and well tended with plenty of space around for relaxing.

The grounds were very well trimmed and manicured, and in very good shape, maybe excellent, considering this was the very end of dry season.
Other Comments
Overall, a wonderful vacation spot, and one we will surely be returning to.

Only negatives I can speak of could have happened at any resort and were guest related; trash tossed around for gardeners to pick up, groups of inebriated guests being loud and abusive without regard for anyone (employee or otherwise) or the time of day (or night), and one of the worst was the adult couple walking up and down the buffet treating it like it was all "finger food", reaching in with their hands and sampling as they wanted.
Restaurants and Bars
The buffet was by far over and above any other of the 5 resorts we've stayed at in Cuba. Maybe somewhat repetitive, especially at breakfast, but very good food.

We ate at the Italian a la carte twice, and enjoyed both times.

We did not eat at the Cuban restaurant, and heard mixed reviews about it.

We ate once at Mar y Sol, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The beach bar was quick and very friendly. The pool bar was the same, with obviously a larger selection of drinks. While the Espresso was somewhat over-extracted, overall the coffee at the pool bar was very good.
Rooms
Rooms are very typical of Cuban resorts. Dated decor and furniture, with plaster or stucco walls and ceramic tile floors, and as usual, very clean. We didn't find the beds as hard as many others mention, and the thin pillows easily "plumped" by stuffing a spare blanket into the pillow case. This resort (or at least our block) had central air that was faultless.

We stayed in Block 5, The only complaint I have was it overlooks the pool bar and I was kept awake every night, and woken in the wee hours, except for one.
Your Arrival
Booked through and flew via Air Transat. Welcomed at the airport by 3 Air Transat reps and check in was quick. (Note: They were very picky with checked luggage weight, but not concerned with carry-on size or weight.) Departure was just a couple of minutes late (only due to a quick deicing) and arrival at Holguin was early. Immigration was quick and painless, as was the late night bus trip to the resort. Check in was quick, with plenty of men to get us to our rooms with the luggage.

I'm 19 years old and i just returned from the Melia Cayo Santa Maria, in Santa Clara! My family and I went for a week and found it marevllous.
Our flight came in really early in the morning of our second day (i think it was around 3 am?). Air transat was picking up dropped flights from sky service....i hope thats not a normal flight time! Anyways, when we got to the airport in Santa Clara, it was time to go through customs and stuff. I mean it when i say, i would would rather go through the Customs in Cuba than the ones in Canada any day. Though it is a little bit on the slow side (a solid half an hour until we found our baggage) everyone was very pleasant and suprisingly good at communicating with us cranky Canadians.
I dont know where someone was getting 10 km from the airport, cause our bus ride was a solid 9 minutes or so. Shockingly, i can't complain about the bus ride. Im someone that gets car sick often but the ride to the airport was spectacular. You got a deep inside look at the town of Caibairien (sp?) which was a real eye opener into Cuban culture, as well as getting to learn the History of the infamous causeway as you ride on it.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
Generally after luncht we'd go and have a little siesta in our room for a couple of hours (the sun wears you out, ye know?). However there were some days when i just wasnt sleepy and would look for things to do instad. I didnt have to look far! I met a guy named Yoelkis, who was basically the resident sports guy! He showed me where the volleyball net was, started a gane of water polo, ping pong tables, archery, beach soccer, tai chi in the mornings, dance lessons , and MORE. Honestly, you are NEVER bored.

But if you are the kind that likes to chill in your room for a couple hours, be not afraid, you do get american/canadian channels. I must have watched ESPN and the Disney Channel every night before bed.

Also, there's buses to and from the market every two hours! Frequent and flexible!
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The beach is also marvellous. It's wide, first of all, and DEEP. i had friends stay at the Barcelo and few weeks earlier and they said their beach was HALF as deep as the Melia's was. The Man who worked on the beach....never got his name (we called him Dawn of the Chairs) was extremely friendly. He would offer to find you a Pilapila (cabana) as well as brush the sand off your chairs and lay your twoels out for you. It was unnecessary, but lovely none the less. The water was absolutely stunning as well. Beautiful turquoise and clear as crystal. The waves get pretty rough at night but there will always be a red flag if the staff thinks its unsafe to swim.

The pools are great too. Big enough so that you rarely run into someone, and alot safer than most because there's a ramp into the water instead of stairs, and it gets deeper GRADUALLY. There's also a killer swim up bar:)
Restaurants and Bars
The breakfast buffet was also wonderful, there's a seperate fresh fruit buffet in the middle of the dining room that serves fruit, juice, smoothies and yogurt and stuff, where the buffet that serves the hot food was in the kitchen at the back of the room.

One of the cooks, his name is Daniel, soon became one of my favourite people ever. He was polite, had eloquent enlgish, and made the best french toast i have ever had.

For lunch we generally went to the Pool side restaurant. We could have gone to the buffet again, or the Beach retaurant, but the one on pool side served the BEST chicken sandwiches i have EVER had, along with all the cervexa you could ask for :)
Rooms
Our room (all rooms, because they all look the same) was absolutely STUNNING. There were three beds: 2 doubles (Which felt more like queens) and a day bed. Luxurous curtains hung from the doorways, and the bathroom was huge. The toilet, badet, and tub were in a separate room off the side of the sink and linnen closet. The safe was digital and we had excellent water pressure.
Your Arrival
When we got to the hotel, we were greeted by VERY pleasant....bellboys i guess you'd call them. Since the flight me and my mother took was later than the one the rest of the family was on, we met them in the front lobby. The "Bellboys" (who i called the multitasking team) loaded our personal luggage onto the little car thing and took it to our room for us so that me and my mother could go have a dinrk with the family in the lobby bar.
The bar is 24 hrs thank god, and is a good center for entertainment. Every night, the activities coordinator (one of the most pleasant people i have ever met, and a downright cool guy) would organise a little show for who ever was in there for drinks. At one point there was a 4 piece saxophone band....thing. It was marevllous. There were also fashion shows, dancing, billiards, and more! Not to mention that bar tenders there were wonderful.

We stayed at this beautiful resort April 20 to April 27th. It was a great vacation. The weather was excellent, we gained weight so that answers your question about the food, we are so tanned that our friends don't recongnize us and we are struggling to get back on track here in Canada, it's going way too fast for us!
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We didn't do much for activities. We did go in town at the market of course. They have so much to offer and so cheap. Please, never try to bargain with the price they offer you, it's cheap enough already as it is. You'll feel bad if you do so please don't. We also went for our pizza fix at Pizza Nova at the Plaza Americas(little mall). except that, well we rested, slept on the beach, walked the beautiful beaches of Varadero, made new friends, hate great food and drank beer all week.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The big activity pool was very busy and loud but if your in to that you will have fun. We spent most of our time at the beach and the quiet pool behind our building. Not enough shade at the quiet pool if you need it. we were up early to reserve shade but they don't have enough of it around the pools. At the beach they have plenty of shade so no worries for the beach. We did find that the beach has changed quit a bit. Lots of broken shells, sea weeds etc and it's not getting cleaned often. The Laguna Azul does have plenty of space in from of the palapas so you don't have everyone walking close to your chair but other resort were terrible for that. They were almost sitting in the water under their palapas, not good. The grounds are still very young so trees and flowers are very small but it will get there eventually.
Other Comments
This resort is wonderful. We are returning guest of Iberostar and we are very happy with this chain of hotels. The price will certainly go up because it is a real fine 5 star resort and will only get better. We had great weather and our vacation was perfect. We left all of our leftover stuff to a girl that worked the lobby cleaning and scubbing ashtrays every night. She was about 5 months pregnant and worked every night we were there. She was just so happy with our little things we take for granted. We tipped all week cause the service was very good and it was laways appreciated but certainly not requested by them in any way. We saw approx 10 weddings on the resort and they were all a bit different from each other but still all very beautiful. Until next year! Adios!
Restaurants and Bars
We tried 3 a la carte. gourment(del chef), Japonese, and the Romantico. They were all very very good. The beef tenderloin was amazing. No complaints on the food. The buffet had lots of choices and the service was excellent. I didn't really like the drinks too much. I noticed that they make many in advance and they were warm. I would always have to send the waitress back for a glass of ice cause the drink was warm. Warm pina colada's, not very good your your belly so be very careful. After I noticed the making of drinks in advance I stopped drinking them and by belly ache went away. I wasn't drinking too many of them but still got discomfort. The pool bar had slush machines so that was cold and refreshing but the lobby bar was a busy spot and I guess they tried to go fast on the drinks. We couldn't believe how fast the got our drink but came to find out that they were done in advance. Beer was safe and we had plenty. The ice cream shop was a real bonus also, yummy!
Rooms
Our room wasn't ready when we got to the resort. We arrived around 11:00am so I wasn't surprised. It did take them way too long to give us our room, the service at the front desk was good and I know they tried their best for us but it was a busy day in the lobby. Once we did get our room we were very satisfied with it. King size bed, clean enough for our taste I guess, not perfect but it was decent. We had emailed the resort with a few choices of buildings and floors and we got what we had requested. I had said in my email that they were only preferences and not to stress it too much but they gave us what we had requested and we were very happy. Building 18, top floor facing the pool but I need to say that all the locations are good. This resort is so well set up it's crazy. It's a big enough resort but you feel right at home because the way the plan of the builgings was designed, loved it. They stocked the bar everyday. It was suppose to be every second day but we always tip well and leave a little note for more Cristal beer and we always got 2 or 3 everyday anyway for when the bars aren't open yet around 9:00 :)
Your Arrival
We flew Air Transat Club Class and it was a wonderful experience. The service you get is just amazing really. We weren't use to that kind of service on our flights, always flew economic rates. Hum, I really enjoyed it. We took it at the airport, last minute because they had seats available and were trying to sell them so we got sucked in but we really enjoyed the experience. We were early arriving in Varadero and things all went very smooth.

This is the second time I stayed at this resort and I will definitely be returning. We departed Ottawa on March 7 for 2 weeks and we all had the time of our lives, I know you can give 5 stars but if it were possible I would give the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya 10 stars for excellence.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We didn't do any excursions out of the resort but there were many to choose from.

They also have a beautiful spa and gym. You can take a nice walk there (about 5min) or you can have your concierge call the shuttle for you. The gym is state of the art, we went everyday around 3pm and there was always something available to use. They also provide you with water and towels.
The spa is without a doubt beautiful and the staff is very nice.

The shows in the evening were by far the best entertainment I have seen in Mexico and the animation team is fantastic. Always getting everyone involved.

The Disco at this resort is also very nice. You need to take a shuttle to ge there but it is a 5 minute ride an well worth it!
Beach/Pools/Grounds
We spent most of our 2 weeks at the beach, however the pools were equally beautiful. The beach can be a little bit rocky but not enough to need shoes although we saw some people wearing shoes.

The pools and the grounds at this resort were imaculate, there wasn't one minute of the day that we didn't see someone cleaning it, very well kept.

There is also a lazy river at this resort, very very fun and a perfect place to get a beautiful tan. They provide you with a floatation device and it takes you through the river very nice touch.
Other Comments
I would have to say that the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya excels in every way.

A special THANK YOU to the Managment of the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya you have created a world class resort. We thouroughly enjoyed our vacation and will be returning without a doubt next year. THANK YOU again and see you in 2011.

Adios!

Restaurants and Bars
There are 8 a la carte restaurants to choose from:
Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean, French, Japanese, Steak House, Cajun and Brazilian. We manageg to go to all of them because we were there for 2 weeks and they are all VERY VERY GOOD! My favourites would have to be the Steak House and the French restaurants.

The Buffets are equally good. I never had a problem finding something to eat and everything I ate was very good. Excellent!!!!

The staff at the bars are very nice they go out of their way to make everyones experience enjoyable. Look for Gabriel and Joakin these guys know how to mix a drink!!!!

There is also a coffee bar at this resort and you can go for a coffee at any time of the day, very yummy!
Rooms
The rooms are spacious, beautiful and very clean, nothing to complain about.

Your Arrival
We arrived in Mexico around 12:30pm and went through customs security very smoothly. We had to wait awhile after we got our luggage to go through security but we were in paradise so we didn't mind. We took a bus to the hotel that takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Check-in at the hotel was seamless. The bell boys were very friendly and assited us with our luggage. We were then greeted with a glass of chamapgne and guided to reception to check-in. The reception staff were very accomodating answering our questions and helping us fill out all the necessary paper work. We were then given our bracelets and our rooms keys. We then went back to the bell boys and we were driven to our rooms and our luggage quickly followed.
It was great got spoiled

I have been to the D.R. 4 times and this was the first one i attended and all the others were a let down after staying here. The service was excellent. The resort was great and felt right at home there. We just loved it. Since then I got divorced and went to another resort by myself and won't make that mistake again. I am already planning a trip back to this resort. I recommend this resort to anyone that wants to get there moneys worth. I will be going back there very soon and hope to be greeted as I did last time. Hope to see you all there you won't be disappointed.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
Lot's to do. You never run out of things to do. And the prices were not bad even your average Joe can afford them. The resort is hard to explain it is just so beautiful everywhere you go. They treat you like royalty. These people know how to run a resort. Everything is so clean and perfect.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The pool was awesome and very clean. The beach is something you will just have to see on your own. We just loved it. And at night could not get any better.

This is a great place to vacation and you really get your moneys worh and I will be returning soon. Like I said have been to the D.R. 4 times and this was the best place by far.

This was our 9th trip to the Victoria. We love this resort! The Victoria is small, quiet, has great staff, good food and special attention from Marlyn Mendoza of Guest Services. The one point I want to make in this review is that the Victoria has its own private beach and beach restaurant between the Barcelo and the Casa Colonial. Because it is not directly on the beach some people think they have to go to the sister resort the Gran Ventana and use their beach...not so. I also want to point out that this resort is not directly on the beach but just a 6 minute walk or a 3 minute golf cart ride. Most of the resorts claiming to be on the beach are actually off the beach behind the sand dunes and the lagoon and there is still a short walk to the beach. Not all the resorts that claim to be on the beach have beach front rooms, again they are behind the dunes and or the lagoon. The Victoria offers much more for much less! The beach bar/restaurant is the newest and best on the strip. It sits "on" the beach and is built up so that when you sit and have lunch or a drink in the bar/restaurant you have a beautiful view of the beach and the ocean. Do do not rule out the Victoria because it is not on the beach, there is always lots of room on the beach, the beach is very clean, raked every morning, they never run out of loungers and the view is spectacular.

After 9 visits and having tried other resorts in the Playa Dorada complex this is the best bang for you buck. The resort is clean, great for people wanting peace, quite and complete relation. If by chance you do want some excitment you can use all the facilites at the sister resort The Gran Ventana, the evening shows and specialty restaurants.

This resort has exceptional handicapped access to restaurants, theater, activities, pools even the beach! You will not feel like you are the only one who is handicapped at this resort –many people with varying disabilities have been repeat visitors to this resort.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The sand has a hard paced base so both strollers and wheelchairs can get down to the beach. At the foot washing stations you just roll right in-you can also use the rain shower option to rinse off the salt water. The foot washing stations are everywhere. The beach restaurants have low-sloped ramps, all wash rooms have handicapped facilities and are close to the beach and pool. The pool has many different types of entrances - hand bars, low slopes beach like entrance you could roll your wheelchair right into the water if you wanted. All pathways are well cared for. The walk ways to the main lobby are marble so its smooth sailing watch for a drop of about four to five inches on the marble surface- there are only a few in the day you might not see them but at night they are lit up.
Other Comments
I would recomend the Barcelo Maya to others who are handicapped or with a wheelchair or a family with a stroller.
Restaurants and Bars
All totally accessable the staff are happy to carry your plate to the table, get something from the buffet, etc.
Rooms
A ground floor room is fine if you are able to transfer there is plenty of room with only a sliding door track to get over to your balcony. The bathroom has a tub with two lower grab bars with an angled bar on the wall. There are also handicapped rooms available with roll in showers.

Relaxing - Beautiful
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
Many activities excellent animation group to keep everyone participating. Off resort tours can be purchased at the beach for a much lower cost than from the tour companies. Saona Island was beautiful but for a full day trip only about three hours allotted for exploring. I would recommend Catalina if you are interested in snorkeling.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Beautiful long white sandy beach with turquoise water. Tons of beach chairs not many teaky tents for shade. The ocean is roped off, alonf the rope is a man made reef, snorkling is FANTASTIC along this reef. A MUST SEE! Pool is huge and pool bar is beautiful. Again not many teaky huts but lots of chairs. Grounds were well kept as well. Very serene.
Restaurants and Bars
Buffet served breakfast, lunch, dinner and all night snacks. Dinner buffet was the only one that I didnt really care to attend. Lunch and Breakfast were good. Snack bar by pool and ocean served excellent burgers, chicken wings, pizza and french fries. This snack bar alternates the seafood and Mexican dinners. Mexican was tradition and good (but I made the mistake and had the shrimp brochette and it was not good at all) We did not attend the Seafood but I heard the steak there was excellent. No crab or lobster. The Japanese did require reservations and you had to be at the guest service booth by 830 am to get a reservation. Surely worth it! Sushi starter, chicken, steak, shrimp and fish accompanied by grilled veggies and rice. Lastly the Italian restaurant was AMAZING!! Excellent apps and antipasto bar. The entrees were very traditional and delicious.
Rooms
Room was beautiful...Bed was soft and had a slope, bathroom needed improvements(faucet was off the shower wall a bit) There was an iron board/iron, fridge, television, hairdryer and large make up mirror. The fridge is stocked daily with 2 pop and 2 beer and 2 water. Safe lock fee is 4 dollars a day. Maid service was phenomenal. There were sand flies on the furniture but was to be expected. We stayed in block 12 which was right by the ocean and pool. Excellent view very clean and quite.
Your Arrival
Flew Skyservice when checking in baggage was said to be way over weight however in bringing more stuff back it was way underweight. In the future if this happened I would request my bags weighed at another station as I believe the Toronto Airport did not get the correct reading on our luggage. Landed in Punta Cana rather than La Romana airport. Could be anywhere from 1.5-3 hour bus ride which is nice to see the surrounding area and towns. Check in was smooth, had to wait for our room but were able to enjoy the facilities while we waited. Bell boy holds your luggage while you tour the resort. Bring swimsuit/light clothing in carry on so you can enjoy the resort while you wait.

We had the most wonderful experience in Mexico imaginable. THe service was excellent as well as the facilities. We had a small complaint and it was handled immediately. We have stayed at the Royal Suites 3 times and each time it seems to get better. So good that we bought 420 nights at the Palladium Travel Club. It's a bit like buying a car with the saleman but all went well. Sice we had been there 3 times, given the cost of these vacations, we should have bought years ago. We look forward to the future stays for us and for our friends and family.

My husband surprised us at Christmas time with a trip to the Domincan Republic; it was a much needed respite for March break especially after volunteering at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver for 16 days. So the rest, relaxation, wonderful resort and overall ambiance of the Gran Bahia Principe in Samana was just what the doctor ordered!
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
There were four tours that Joel, our rep from Air Canada told us about - we went on the boat ride to the national park where you can go into a cave and see some cave drawings from the original Indians, as well as going through some mangroves and then off to a private beach for a Domican lunch. It was a full day excursion and well worth it. Other excursions were a jeep tour which took you to a coffee plant, a horse back riding tour to Limone Falls and a catamaran tour. As we only planned to take the one tour we wanted to see the national park. Samana is just becoming a tourist resort and it is an ecologically protected area. One thing to be careful of - we wanted to go whale watching but Joel advised us it was not worth it because the whales are done mating in March and the males have left; the females are waiting with the babies until they are old enough to migrate. One family we met did go whale watching and said it was a big waste of money as they saw nothing - so make sure it really is whale season if you want to watch whales.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
Pool is quite big and even though there were a lot of families and kids, there were still plenty of chairs with umbrellas and room to swim; you do have to get out early though to nab your spot. The beach is beautiful and there is a huge coral reef for snorkeling which we did a lot of. You can walk quite a bit and go off grounds although you are advised to do so in a group. My youngest and I walked quite a bit on the beach and really enjoyed the beautiful sand and vistas. The beach is very clean, there are a lot of lounges and umbrellas with hooks to hang up your beach bags. My son said he was bitten a bit by either sand flies or something - but I was never bothered. You really need to be conscious of using lots of sunscreen because it is extremely hot; especially when you are snorkelling and not thinking of the sun on your back. There are some vendors who will come by while you are on the beach but they don't pester you. You can just say no thanks and they will leave you alone. There is no topless bathing at the pool and I saw very little of it on the beach (a bit of a relief with a 15 year old boy).
Other Comments
The staff are great; the resort is very clean. You can take a quick trip into town to buy cigars, rum, vanilla, and coffee which the area is known for - Domincan coffee is excellent and they drink it con leche (half hot milk, half coffee). The Gran Bahia Principe is a very relaxing resort - you can take part in what the animation group offers (salsa dancing, sports, spanish lessons, etc) or you can thoroughly relax with a book. This resort is not party central -there are no Americans (American airlines do not go to that area), there weren't any university students acting unruly, and there was lot of older people or families - my two boys made tons of friends who they still speak with on MSN. You may see a few too many speedos but hey, relax, you're in the Domincan.
Restaurants and Bars
You can eat and drink almost 24-7. The pool bar is very busy and there is a bar out by the grill which is excellent - and the beer is colder than at the pool bar. There is also a beach bar and a bar near the hot tub. Food was excellent - lots of choice at the main buffet and the grill; I loved the rice and beans - could not get enough, and fresh tomatoes in March -fabulous. There are four a la carte restaurants and you can make reservations at each one, once. We only went to three, the Italian, the fish restaurant (pescadoro) and the gourmet. I wouldn't recommend the Italian (and why you would even eat Italian in the Dominican is beyond me - but my kids wanted it). However, the fish and gourmet were outstanding - anything with fish is great as its local. However, my husband had steak at the gourmet and it was outstanding. No complaints at all about either of these restaurants - the room ambiance is lovely, the service very attentive and overall just a really nice meal. At an all inclusive the meals make it or break it for me so this was truly delightful. Service at the large buffet restaurant can be a bit inattentive, however, it was March break and very, very busy. House wines are very nice. At nice, in addition to the main lobby bar there would be several stations - one had any kind of coffee you might like (Irish, Spanish, cappucino, etc), another station would have exotic cocktails like Kir Royale, Mimosa, etc; One night in the main buffet they also had a rum tasting - it was terrific!
Rooms
Our room was quite large; it is very modern - jet tub, separate shower. Bed were very comfortable; everything was extremely clean. Your room key turns on the air conditioning but as the hotel is trying to be as green as possible you can't use your second room key to keep the air running all day - the staff will take it to ensure the air is turned off. However, it's not a big deal - the room gets cool quite quickly. Towel service was excellent and there is turn down service for Air Canada guests but we were missed a few times - out of six days we had turn down on half. There are nice bath robes and slippers in the room, lots of supplies (shampoo, etc); and a mini bar - which has two beers in it and some pop. Although we tipped the staff, only once did we get more than two beers in the fridge.
Your Arrival
Arrival could not have been more perfect. Our luggage arrived promptly and we were escorted to the bus where we met the Air Canada representative Joel. The 90 minute bus ride was very scenic and Joel kept up a running and amusing commentary orienting us to the DR and Samana. At the hotel, our bags were brought to our rooms and the beach towels were already in the room, so what else could we do but head right out to the pool and beach! This was the smoothest arrival I've had at any resort in the Caribbean.

Just returned from this amazing place yesterday, and had to write a review. Don't listen to all of the negative comments, go, go, go!!!! I have travelled to Cuba and the DR, and this has been by far the best. We were a group of 11, and everyone had a great time. This resort is simply beautiful. The staff are so friendly and helpful. We can't wait to go back next year, only next time it will be for 2 weeks.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
Didn't really do any of the activities, just laid around an relaxed. We did hire a private driver to take us around. We went to the Coba. Our driver was so knowledgable and friendly. He took us shopping and sightseeing. Some of our group did the 4x4 excursion. They had a blast.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The beach is alittle rocky. I had water shoes with me, so it really wasn't a problem. The water is awesome, lots of waves. The waitresses will come around the beach and take your drink order, so you don't have to go stand in the line for one.
Other Comments
Please don't listen to all the negative reviews. This resort is simply the best!!!!!! Can't wait to go back.
Restaurants and Bars
The food was amazing. Lots of different choices. If you couldn't find anything to eat, then you are a very picky eater. We found the food was the best by far. So much to choose from. The bartenders are great, and will do their best to make you anything you want.
Rooms
We stayed in a junior suite, (room 1163) and it was amazing. Marble everything!!!! So clean, so beautiful!!!!
Your Arrival
We arrived from Halifax at 11am local time. Check in was a breeze. Our rooms were not ready until 3pm, but no problem. We got our braclets on and were free to use everything on the resort. Had some relaxing drinks in the lobby bar, then went and had lunch at the buffet. Explored around some, more drinks, then our room was ready.

Arrival: April 2009
My arrival was Ok. The person at the front desk (Mr. Elvis) was very nice.

Rooms:
The room was Ok. We really expected much more for what we were paying for. The problem was the towels. We used them and they never replaced the same quantity. We had to call the front desk to get them. On another topic, when we arrived we noticed one pillow was missing. I had to call them twice to get it. Only one soap we got. We also had to call them to get another soap (we had to do this everyday). The other problem was the minibar, which was empty at all ties. They never provided us with drinks or anything. They did provide us with a coffee maker, but the sugar was never replaced in the quantity we had the previous night.

Restaurants and Bars:
Pretty expensive. All of them. The service was ok, far from outstanding based on their prices. The buffett breakfast was $ 16.50 and was just that, buffett. You couldn't order anything else but what the buffet had. For $ 16.50 each ? C'mon !!!

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The pool was pretty nice. The beach was very rocky and it wasn't that large either. Regarding the grounds, we had WI-FI only in the lobby. Neither in the rooms, nor the pool, nor the beach, etc. Besides, we needed a password to get connected. This password expired 3 days later and when we requested a new one they told us the person in charge (of doing that) was off on week ends.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
One day they scheduled a karaoke show. We went and found there was a wedding instead. They didn't even bother to let us know the karaoke had been cancelled. We took one tour to visit Marigot and Phillisburg. It was very well organized and lasted what they told us. The tour guy was very corteous and answered every question we asked.

I wouldn't go back to that hotel.

best I have ever had
Rooms
The Riveira rooms are some of the nicest our group has stayed in.They are
"huge" you could easily put a family of 6 in them if they would allow it.
Big jacuzzi bath tubs that open up right into your room if you want.
We had the most beautiful wheelchair accessible bath & shower. Huge!

Arrival: Feb 8th to 22nd
Air Canada vacations 6am to Toronto 8;30 to Samana OH add an extra 1 hr 15 minutes to that for delays, arrived at 3:30 PM Sunday the 8th via Air Canada After an exciting 2 hrs to hotel when it shold of been 45 min. ( A LIE ) Wife being a Diabetic and waiting 12 hrs was desperate for a little food so she could to take her insulin. She was told absbsolutely not" wait till 6:30. No porters or smiles upon arrivals, just a bunch of long faces and a run down lobby.

Rooms
I know for sure a lot of people that write reviews have never been to a true 4 star resort before. But I can assure them them, they will find shock and AWW when they visit a true 4 star. These rooms are a joke !!! Have you ever heard the phrase of pinch a penny to save nickle, Steal from Peter to give to paul. No TV for two weeks, no water first two days had to fight to get it. Need soap or shampoo gring your own to eliminate the hassel. Toilet sinks not cleaned even tough we left 2 bucks aday plus sweets. We had a different maid for two days and she was very appreciative and did a good job.

Restaurants and Bars
What can I say ! 30 out of 34 people got ill including wife and myself , that really makes for a great holiday. This is the worst We've ever experienced anywhere out of 7 resorts. Buffets are so small you better get there early to eat the raw food, ever watch a pride of lions on TV feeding on a fresh kill, Well these Europeans and their so called refinement just went down the indoro and I mean literally, We ate bread the last four days as you would get sick just looking at the food.

Beach/Pools/Grounds
Pools great for kids ! To small to swim in for adaults, NO swim up bars bars about 200ft away. Bar tenders very good especially when you tip them like we did, got great service. The boos is cheap but who cares we didn't drink enough where that matters. Grounds are well kept and basically makes this place looks better then it really is. BEACH" have any of you ever been to a beach ?

After Cuba and Punta Cana, Sant domingo area. There is NO Beach here ! It is low tide when they take their pics, at high tide water is to the tree lines and if you notice everyone lying on the grass , not on the beach. You think you can just walk out into the ocean wrong I broke my big toe first time out, all weeds and sink holes so good luck there. The only place you can go is where they sell snorkel and Scuba trips and walk out from there, it's alright. Lots of loungers but hard to get away from the sun.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We went Whale watching it was great , saw 6 whales weren't big but still awsome, it was really rough when we went out and many people got sea sick, but we were OK and enjoyed the trip. Saw a sea turtle when walking out at high tide just wife and I really a pretty thing to see.

I'm dissabled and this is not the resort for you ! I LOVE Dominican People and found out that this is a stepping stone resort, these people work 17hrs a days 11 days straight with 3 days off, I speak a little Spanish and talked to three different employees. So don't be sooo cheap and leave the a buck here and there. Great resort if you're french ! But I'm not and would never advise anybody to go to this one Star resort. A two star in Cuba at a third the price would be better Believe me. WE DO NOT AVISE ANYONE TO GO HERE ! THERE ARE BETTER PLACES AT BETTER RATES !

Feb, 2009
Arrival: Feb 1st - Feb 15th
Our Vacation was booked through Signature Vacations out of Toronto with the "Star" Service option. The bus ride to the Hotel was less than an hour including a stop for refreshments in route. Our room was not ready when we arrived but was available within a couple of hours

Rooms:
Our room was a nicely appointed Jr. Suite with a King Size Bed in Building 16. During the last couple of days we had difficulty with the A/C and at the time of our departure had not been resolved. This was one of a liteney of infrastructure problems which ranged for water leaks, water backups and strong sewage smells.

Restaurants and Bars:
We ate at all 3 of the of the Buffet Restaurants and 4 of the 7 A-La-Carte Restaurants. The Mo-Bay and The Negril Buffets are on a staggered schedule for lunch, Because of high winds the Blue Lagoon was closed for a few days during our stay. Bubba's Steak House was by far the most popular and because there were no reservations one had to get there early or endure a long wait to get in or be denied access completely. The Pasta restaurant was just as popular while the others there was usually a little or no wait accessing the other A-La Cartes. The food was great in the 4 A-La-Cartes we ate in especially, the Rib Eye Steak in Bubba's, and the Rasta Pasta and the Jerk Chicken in the Creole. The Seafood Food Possidon Restaurant was not open the first week we were there.
Management were constantly handing out assessment forms in the buffets asking guests their opinion to the point of overkill. We had difficulty with guests picking up and handling food with their hands rather than use the tools provided.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The Beaches in the resort are a "Work in Progress". In the evenings when weather permits sand was hauled in and spread with heavy equipment. All the beaches with the exception of Sunset Cove are exposed to sea and when the winds were high the beaches were Red flagged.
The pools are deep, the pool with the Pool Bar is up to 4 1/2 feet deep making the bar and the built in Jacussi's out of reach for anyone who may be a little timid about deep water. The 2 Adult Pools are 5 Feet Deep. Many of the pools have damaged tiles and there is a real danger of foot damage

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We went on a tour of Negril and Rick's Cafe for $15.00US. We also did the Croydon Plantation Tour. The tour was very informative and our Guide Alisa was great. We met the Plantation Owner Mr Henry who went around speaking to all his guests learning what they thought and offering a wealth of information. The road to the Plantation was hair raising at times made worse because your prospective is distorted driving on the right side of the road. We took a taxi to Montego Bay. We hired a cab outside the resort for half the price of the Juta Tour Cabs. Karl our Driver was fantastic and he took us where we wanted to go. He went with us to insure our safety and protect us from being harrased by merchants.
You can arrange free tours with the animation staff. The offer a shopping trip to Montego Bay, and Negril, and a sunset cruse to Negril

We stayed here Feb 3-17th, this is our 3rd consecutive visit to this hotel, we felt very looked after here indeed!! and would certainly return again!!
ARRIVAL & ROOM
We flew Skyservice, and were able to book the bulkhead with a doctors note due to my husbands knee problem, it made quite a difference in the amount of legroom! When we arrived we were given my requested ground floor room in the 8600 block, I found out the next day that we could have requested the garden view rooms in the 90’s I wrongly thought these were suite rooms as on the map they were pictured differently from the others, when I talked customer relations she wondered, as well ,why I had not requested one of these, anyway a BIG thank-you to the front desk staff who changed us to 9211, it made a huge difference!!

The standard rooms here are in blocks of 2 level structures with 4-8 rooms each, the grounds are meticulously maintained

We have yet to stay in one of the lagoon rooms as we prefer to stay closer to the beach, they are quite a bit of extra money and we are hardly in our room anyway so to us it was not worth it, but others have said its fantastic to watch the sunsets and to feed barracuda and various fish off your porch if you are on the ground floor!

I’ll just add as well that this is a great resort to go to if you have any mobility problems!!
DAY AROUND
For $5.CC you can take the 45 min bus ride to Cayo Guillermo where as guests of the MCC you have full use of the facilities of both the Melia and the Sol Club as well you can use the facilities at the Sol Club Cayo Coco right next door, and the Tryp which is a 15 min walk down the beach , you could also take a taxi or horse and buggy to the Tryp but walking is cheaper and better exercise! The day around only applies until 5 p.m. but there are no other restrictions, you just tell the front desk staff where you are going and they give you a temporary bracelet
DEPARTURE
Thankfully we booked the VIP lounge!! we were supposed to fly out by 1100 however we were still there at 5 p.m. due to the bad weather in Ottawa. While others had to put up with hard chairs and standing in line for food we were treated to nice couches and a full bar with grilled snacks then a complimentary lunch, all served to us!! Well worth the extra $25 C.C. Anyway due to the severe ice storm we were told we would not be flying out that day so we were loaded up along with our luggage and taken to the Sol Club which is next door to the MCC we were very efficiently registered, given our bracelets and a nice room, I can’t say enough about how well the resort staff coped with this unexpected influx of tired frustrated travelers!! We ended up having a great supper and last walk on the beach, then a short sleep until 0300 when we had to be in the lobby to be taken back to the airport, we were then fast tracked through the airport as we had already been checked in previously, so quite the adventure, but hey, we got to have bonus time in Cuba!!
POOL
Beautiful, but shallow, no swim up bar but a few nice changes this year, there are now little shade huts around the pool all along the side where the gym and sauna are located, These are very pretty lit up at night, and must be great to lie under when the weather is hot!!
RESTAURANTS & ENTERTAINMENT
BEACH GRILL: our favorite place to be!! Daily preparation of whole grilled red snapper ,shrimp or various meats of your choice right by the beach, as well you can order from the main menu, quite decent Spanish wines are served, loved having a glass of rose with my fish This turns into the Cuban restaurant at night, we went twice and quite enjoyed it

BUFFET: There are now more tables outside great for us as we prefer to sit there however this year for 4 days they brought the tables inside as it was just too cold!! also many people did not go the outdoor Cuban restaurant (beach grill by day) or the International again due to the weather, so the buffet was quite packed!! Food here quite good they are always grilling something different or will be carving ham, turkeys or fish, good salads made to order along with the usual buffet selections, several nights there were stacks of lobster tails!!

INTERNATIONAL: This is the one on the lagoon, I have seen many reports that people have been bothered by mosquitoes, but in the 3 years we have been going it has not been an issue, so Feb must be their off season!! Fabulous service and menu, with strolling classical musicians combined with the red sunsets over the lagoon make for a very memorable evening!!

ITALIAN: This is upstairs from the pool snack bar, beautiful view of the pool all lit up at night, menu fairly good here as well

You can now have romantic dinners on the hill overlooking the pool where the wedding gazebo is located, these have replaced dinners on top of the little tower by the billiard bar.

ENTERTAINMENT Shows every night at the open air theatre quite good but we did not watch many as were usually too tired as we are early risers, no disco here but you can go next door to the one at the Sol Club, it is only a few minutes walk, but again we have never been We were treated to some lovely classical music playing from the wedding gazebo overlooking the pool prior to the shows, we were disappointed that there were no longer any shows in the lobby , as last year we had fabulous singers after the main show was finished, however there was a pianist who played quite regularly in the lobby at night as well as during the day, there were a few new bands which toured to resort but we were glad to see the regulars Audaces de Hoy still there.

BARS:

BEACH: A little hut with several tables around it, great drinks, best Mojitos here along with almost any thing else, cold Cristal beer always available, great to go a few steps from your lounge chair to get a beverage

POOL: good bar here as well along with grilled sandwiches, thin crust pizza, hamburgers etc

LOBBY: quite enjoyable many tables and chairs, people would congregate here in the evening or through the day, good cappuccino here as well only thing missing is stools at the bar, you usually order your drinks from the strolling waiters

BILLIARD: This bar is located on the lagoon, it opens at 4 p.m. each day has a few tables inside as well as outside on the lagoon patio, there are 2 billiard tables here as well as a jukebox and video screen this is a great place to hang out after the show!!
STAFF & SERVICE
Again, absolutely top notch!! management often approaching, asking if everything was o.k.,. all our waiters very attentive, but a special thank-you to our “regular” lunch time waiters Jesus and Manny who have looked after us at the beach grill for the second year in a row!!
WEATHER
Not good!! Quite cool and windy, but with a few nice days our first week but absolutely terrible our 2nd week, overcast, cold and windy, beach was getting quite eroded, several beach huts uprooted and on their sides!!, most damage to the Sol Club beach beside the MCC. There was even a cabin cruiser that became caught on the reef just out from the hotel, it completely broke up due to the rough seas so the beach was littered with all the debris

We have been going to Cayo Coco for 10 years always around the same time (first 2 weeks in Feb) and have always had fabulous weather but this is the 2nd year in a row we had a week of disappointing weather, so if we go again in Feb it will be for the mid or last 2 weeks!!
All I can say is we will not be back
Hotel Atlantis Royal Towers

Mike >  2 contribution(s)
Apr, 2003 | Leisure | Family
My wife and 10 year old daughter and I just returned from a week's stay at the Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. We were there from 4/13/03 to 4/19/03. Where do I start without sounding like Jack Lemmon in "The Out of Towners"?
Of the islands I've been to, the natives hawking their wares seemed to be the most agressive here. An example, if you even go near the beach with a girl the age of my daughter, the women will come up and offer to braid their hair. Having done this for our daughter last year in Turks and Caicos for $60, we asked how much. $130 was the going rate. Don't pay it or any thing close. After you say no, they will ask you what you want to pay. We said $60 and they said $80 and she gave both my daughter and wife a necklace. They all negotiate. And they only take cash.

I would suggest that if you are still willing to brave the crowds, that you do a lot of research before you go. Don't just take the travel agents word or information. Unless they've been there recently, you need to make some calls. The side excursions that sound interesting such as swimming with the dolphins ($145 per person) was sold out a month before we even got there. Not that we would have done it but just an example of expectations of a spontaneous jaunt needing to balanced with reality.

What I get out of all of this, is that all the brochures show the Royal Towers. Great but naturally more expensive than the others and much more desireable. In fact there is even another step above if you want to get away and that is at the adjoining Ocean Club. Its a shuttle ride away and is apparently the place to go to be pampered at much higher rates with restaurants that are alway booked before you get there. Never got over there myself. But for $600 or $800 a night you'd be better off going to Cap Jaluca in Anguilla for that much.

All I can say is we will not be back. It's too big, too noisy, too crowded and there is very little regard for guests' needs if they arrive and haven't done their homework at least 2 months before arriving.
Other beefs
The Sports workout facility is almost a mile from the Beach tower so just going there will probably give you the workout you desire. The property is so large it remined me of EPCOT in Orlando. You will walk forever. The ONLY ATM machine on the property is in the casino between the Coral and Royal towers. What a coincidence. Of course, don't rely on them since they were frequently not working the week I was there. (You can go to the casino cashier as an alternative but you will need a photo ID in order to get money from a debit or credit card.)

You will hear some noise about the kids club, Rush. Ages 7 to 13 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. Older kids from 14 to 17 later. No parents allowed other than to drop off (and pay the admission fee, of course) Judging by the way the second age group is dressed,(girls like hookers and boys like "Abercrombie Zombies"), there is justification for the sign on the front door of the club prohibiting "PDA" or public disaplay of affection including" dirty dancing, kissing, groping. How come they didn't have these places when I was a teenager.

I'm still on a roll. About the drinks. They love pushing the local drinks. All of which contain a lot of sugar. Every drink is portion controlled so be warned. At least you won't get drunk. Broke, but not intoxicated.
Pool and souveniers
To top off the pool experience, all but the Beach tower pools close at 5:30pm. So if you thought about a nice relaxing swim at 6pm without the crowds, forget it. To make sure of this all the food places and outdoor spots to get a drink also shut down at 5:30pm as well as the towel huts. About the towels, you need to show your room key to get towels as well as your ID bracelet for each day that you are in the pool areas. Yet the rules state that if you fail to return a towel, your room will be charged $25 per towel. Given all the towels I saw laying around the pool and beach near the end of the day, either they are not enforcing the rules or they're making a hell of a lot of money with the fines. One last grating thing about the Atlantis experience is that apparently the hotel offers tours to outsiders. So in order to properly control the pools, you will be asked to produce your room key/identity tag by employees standing at the entrance areas all over the complex. This forces you to have to walk down to the towel huts and stand in line to be given the bracelet of the day or be constanly asked to prove you belong there.

Whatever you do, don't buy any souveniers of a local nature at the hotel. They are usually triple the street price. And the women that prowl the beach selling shirts and beads an necklaces are way over priced. If you must return with any of this kind of stuff, take the $3 boat shuttle across the harbor and go to the straw market and negotiate there. And even there, don't pay what they say. You can usually get even those vendors to cut the price by half.
The buffets
Third, the buffets. While these clearly provide value, they don't if you bought the goumet plan. Of the two we visited, the Water's Edge in the Coral Tower is better. Its bigger and the food is better. The Seagrape in Beach tower (naturally) is noisy and people lined up for food, kids dropping plates of pasta, and in general, only good when shut out of any other place to eat. One avenue that will be suggested to you by the hotel when you complain as we did about being shut out of all the restaurants before we even arrived, is to speak to the concierge. They will tell you to just show up at a particular restaurant and hope for a cancellation. We did that but it only seemed to work after 8:30 or so and who wants to wander around with a child with such uncertainty. And like I said, if youre in Beach tower you will definitely be wandering around. But the reality is that even this tactic was unsuccessful for us on three of the four nights we tried it. What I find interesting is that if you make a resevation and don't show up, the hotel told us that they bill the party $50 per person for failing to show. So now the hotel never loses. As a gourmet plan participant, I show up, lacking a reservation, since all the restaurants were booked before I've even arrived, and if willing, will take the place of the diner who failed to show (and was charged $50) and now I cover that person's dinner.

Oh and if you order a bottle of wine, you will get very large traditional wine glasses. If you go cheap and just order by the glass, they will remove the large wine glass and serve you your single drink in a much smaller wine glass. This way, you will drink the bottled (read more expensive) wine more quickly. It's kind of like any casino- the odds are always in there favor. Now let's talk about the attractions. Much effort was made to integrate many species of marine life throughout the resort and they did it very creatively. For children and adults it's very interesting. Now if you could just eliminate about half of the people that are there, it would be tolerable. It seems that by 9am at any pool , every damn beach chair is "taken" by guests. I know people that told us that they get up at 7am and go out to the pool bringing their dirty towel from the day before (since the towel booths don't open until 9:30am) and stake out their chairs. According to the Pool Etiquette chapter in the in-room guide book, the reseving of chairs is not permitted. Yet the practice is so pervasive, you're forced to either lay on the cement or try your luck out on the beach, where you will almost certainly encounter the same problem. My wife sat on the cement near a pool watching our daughter swim for an hour next to an unoccupied chair that had a towel on it. Finally she sat on it. No sooner did she sit down when the reserving occupant, a rude, loud-mouthed woman ("probably from New York"- J. Lithgow, Terms of Endearment) confronted my wife and yelled at her to get off "her chair" and repeated this several times to those around her. My wife got up, explained that no one had been there for over an hour to which the woman responded that because she had her towel there, my wife was to have known to keep off her chair. Since I was scuba diving that morning I missed this confrontation but was given the blow-by-blow by my wife when I arrived in the afternoon. I then went over to the woman's husband (she was not there , of course) and told him what had happened. He simply said that they had had the chairs all morning by simply reserving them. I explained what I understood to be hotel policy regarding the prohibition of such reserving and he said go complain to the hotel. I did and was told that the hotel policy, does in fact prohibit the holding of chairs and that those that do will have their property removed and stored until claimed by the guest. I tell you this because what should be a time and place to relax is any thing but at the pools.
The hotel
First, the hotel. Our only choice when we booked was the Beach tower. The other choices are the Coral tower and Royal tower. Our room was spacious and clean. The view of the ocean was nice except for the fact that our entire side of the tower overlooked an ugly rooftop and the service and pool area of the Sheraton next door. You see nothing of the place you are visiting. This building was originally built in 1967 and short of lobby renovations and hallways downstairs it looks as if not much has ever been done since then. Be careful of the balconies. There so small you can lose a child.

During our stay one of only three elevators worked for 3 of the 7 days we were there. The second finally was fixed and the third is still probably out of order. There didn't seem to be any great desire to fix the problem by staff. So plan on walking up stairs or make sure you get a low floor. When we were dropped off by the pre-arranged airport transfer company, Dan Knowles, we were deposited at the Coral tower lobby where we were told to check in. Then a five minute walk through crowds to our building the Beach tower. Apparently, the Beach tower doesn't even warrant it's own check in staff even though it must have in the past since the facility is set up for it. I got the feeling that the Beach tower is the poor stepchild of Atlantis. A clear example of this was that all convention facilities seemed located there to handle the groups that like to throw water balloons out the windows and such. There is only one restaurant in the tower and it only serves buffet. All of the other nicer restaurants are either in the Coral or Royal towers. Now lets talk about the meals.

My travel agent suggested that due to the typically expensive meals, it may make sense to buy the Gourmet food plan for my family. I was told that this permitted one to dine in any of the restaurants (although some had specific dollar limits which if exceeded we were responsible for the excess) for all the meals. The cost was $80 per person per day and $40 for a child. So we bought the Gourmet package for the week. ( you have to buy it for your entire stay, not just a few days). Don't do it.

First, unless you make reservations at least 2 to 3 weeks before your arrive, you will be shut out of every restaurant except the buffets. That happened to us. We paid $200 per day to eat at buffets and this does not include any alcohol. (A beer is $6.50, glass of wine is $11.00 A bottle of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio sells retail for $18 in CT. Here it is $53.) Second, the Gourmet plan does not include lunch. That will run you an additional $45-55 per day for 2 adults and one 10 year old child. And for that we got to stand in lines for up to 15 minutes just for a hambuger, fries, and a water. And we chose to eat at the Cave Bar Grill out at the pool. If you decide to go to a sit down place for lunch, plan on a 45 minute wait and a $60 tab in a very noisy and crowded venue.
The best trip I've ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just returned from the best resort Blau Costa Verde. Flew Air Transat. Arrived April 28/10 and left at midnight on May 5/10. Flew first class definitely worth the extra 55.00. I am 24 years old and traveled with my mother this year. We had an amazing time. The hotel is beautiful with lots to do for any ages. The food was amazing. Some of it even tasted like home. They don't have ketchup very often so I would suggest bringing your own. The staff was so helpful and very friendly. Some things that they really need are sunscreen, deodorant, soap, shampoo and conditioner. The things we take for granted. So if you can take some of these essentials to give to the staff. Trust me they really appreciate it. The beach is awesome but make sure you take your water shoes because there is some corral. You can feed the fish right out of your hand. Barbara does hair and nails. She is awesome so make sure to book an appointment with her. And if you do go by the fitness center please tell Barbara, Deni and the nurse Joa that Laura from Nova Scotia sends big hugs and lots of love. I had a blast with them. I wish they had of played more Cuban music at the restaurants but that is my only complaint. The Cuban restaurant was my absolute favorite. The Italian was amazing too. If you go to the Cuban restaurant get a banana split for dessert. I swear it was better than dairy queen. We stayed in room 3307 had an amazing view of the mountains and water. Maid was great. Hot water everyday. Needless to say I hope to be returning to this resort very soon. I would recommend it to anyone. Please remember to keep an open mind when traveling anywhere in Cuba they do not have the same things that we have. They are the sweetest people. And please remember to tip. They depend so much on this. If anyone is traveling to this resort and you live in or around Halifax if you could contact me at lauraj212010@hotmail.com if you would be willing to take a letter down for me that would be so appreciated. If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me by email.

February 2007

My husband and I went to the Atlantis Hotel in June 2006 just nine months after a very disabling stroke. We had a handicapped room there and was very comfortable. It was easy to shower. There were hand-held showerheads, roll-in capability, and a showerchair.

Getting around the grounds there was no problem considering the size of the property. There are lifts in some areas where there are stairs and elevators in other areas. The staff was very accomodating throughout the hotel.

I totally recommend this hotel for anyone traveling with a disability.

Viva Wyndham Playa Dorada

Canada
February 2008

My husband and I just got back from 2 weeks at the Viva Wyndham and enjoyed our stay immensely. We read a lot of reviews before we left and found that they were helpful in knowing what to expect. The one thing that no on has commented on is accessibility for people with disabilities, so I’ll devote my review to that. As far as food, tipping, helpful employees, and entertainment, they were wonderful and have been touched on more than adequately in previous reviews.

My husband is a C 6/C 7 Quadriplegic, so our comments are based on this type of disability. Specifically, our comments pertain to a manual wheelchair, as we are unable to comment on the specific needs and limitations of guests requiring power chairs. There was however a lady there at the same time who used crutches and had no trouble at all getting around.

To highlight, the areas that we found to be accessible are:
- The parking lot and entryway
- The lobby
- The corridors
- The pool deck
- The Las Palmas Restaurant
- The Bamboo Restaurant
- The Cuevo Pool Bar
- The walk-way to the beach
- The Ibiza Beach Restaurant

The areas we feel could be improved on for better access include: - The guest rooms
- The Theatre / Disco
- The spa
- The gym
- The beach
- The Viva Shop

We found the Viva Wyndham Complex quite accessibly designed. There are virtually no stairs, and the wide winding ramps are pleasant to navigate whether by wheels or on foot. The open-air concept makes for both an aesthetically-pleasing environment as well as a wheel-chair friendly one. Tables and buffets are placed at a reasonable height, with ample distance separating them. Above all, the staff endeavor to make all guests feel welcome, and are always willing to lend a hand.

Specifically, we would like to mention two groups who went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The bell-boys: Francisco, Santos, Emilio and Daladie were patient, understanding and strong. On several occasions, my husband expressed the desire to swim in the beautiful outdoor pool, something he has been unable to do since his accident ten years ago. This wonderful group of men took it upon themselves to lift him in and out of the pool. We will never forget this gesture of kindness. Also, several of the animation team, Aneudy, Jairo, Chayanne, Rafael and Pablo were determined that he would not miss their shows.

Despite the theatre being up two flights of stairs, these men carried him up just before the show, and brought him down afterwards. These wonderful men also lifted my husband onto the beach so he could enjoy the sand and ocean view! This type of courtesy has been unheard of elsewhere in our travels.

Of all the areas we feel need improvement, the guest room presented the greatest challenge. We were advised that there are two rooms specifically designed for the physically disabled. We called ahead to ensure we had one of these rooms, but upon arrival found that despite the room being labeled as accessible, it lacks several key elements that define a room as wheelchair accessible. If you are intending to go, I would recommend getting a junior suite on the ground floor. The ‘accessible room’ has some very narrow turning radiuses around the corner to the washroom and no rooms have a roll-in shower available.

Wyndham has committed itself to “doing everything within our power to meet the special needs and interests of each and every one of our visitors.” This was shown to us by no one more strongly than Rosangela de la Rosa, Wedding Coordinator at the Viva Wyndham. Rosangela went out of her way every day to ensure that we were welcome, comfortable, and enjoying ourselves. It was an honor to have our wedding officiated by this young woman and Wyndham is lucky to have such a committed, hard-working staff member. I would recommend a wedding here for anyone!

Enjoy!

Iberostar Paraiso Grand
Rick

December 2007
We just returned from Iberostar Grand on Dec 2, 2007. After enjoying a week of luxury I felt I needed to write this for others seeking a vacation here, who are disabled or just using a wheelchair for transport. This resort is for People with Disabilities. The other reviews have it right in all areas, from the grand elegance of this place to the food, rooms, spa, beach, view, butlers, room service etc. This resort is most beautiful place. No matter how many tripadvisor reports you read, and no matter how many pictures you see, I really do not know that they would do justice to the Iberostar Grande. I read many, many reviews and even called the resort directly and still was blown away when we arrived. The resort has wheelchair accessible rooms that have a roll in shower, grab bars, a shower stool, no steps to living area or balcony. The room is just like the others minus the tub. The resort is fully accessible by wheelchair. If it is not an elevator it is a ramp. The staff did whatever they could to make my stay the best. Alberto was one of our butlers and deserves applause! They even asked for suggestions to make my stay more comfortable. Awesome people! Awesome resort!
Riu Vallarta - Nuevo Vallarta
Donna
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
July 2007

My family just returned from a 2 week trip to Nuevo Vallarta June 30-July 14, 2007, where we stayed at the newly opened Riu Vallarta. My husband has incomplete quadriplegia, and has the ability to walk a short distance with aid. Although he didn't travel with us this time, I scouted out the hotel for a possible future trip. There were at least 6 different people in both power and manual chairs staying at the Riu during our time there, and I thought that this hotel really was accessible to all. Both the large adult and children's pools had gently graduated steps for entry, and I saw bystanders and hotel staff quickly come to the aid of paraplegics who wanted to go in the water, which had a maximum depth of less than 5 feet at one end. Life vests could be had for flotation. There was a ramp to the start of the beach, and you could easily transfer to one of the many lounge chairs and be carried to where you wanted, or maybe they will have a beach adapted wheelchair purchased as I suggested the management do!

All rooms in the hotel have hand-held showerheads, but for a regular room you would have to have the ability to get into and out of a tub, even though grab bars were standard. Bathrooms were large enough to get a wheelchair in and turn. I also viewed the 4 designated accessible rooms, and they had wheel-in showers with a bench provided.

The hotel food was great, especially the lowly buffet! We thought they changed quite a lot of the menu every day and there really was no need to go to the specialty restaurants at all.

Access throughout the hotel was great, and there seemed to be almost as many staff as patrons, so service was terrific.

The downfall was that a disabled traveler would be restricted from taking the bus, and this hotel is at the end of the line, so taxi to town is $17US one way. We found that for tours that it is cheaper and better to rent a van and one of the tour operators that don't work out of the hotel for a day and all our needs were met and we were in control. I got the name of the tour operator from the main desk, although they are, of course, supposed to steer you to the operators in the hotel lobby. Check on line for other operators before you go.

Gran Porto Real

February 2007

We stayed at the Gran Porto Real in Playa Del Carmen for two weeks in mid-January, 2007. I am a C6 quadriplegic from a spinal cord injury and confined to a wheelchair so had some special challenges as I do on pretty much any trip.

This was our sixth trip to various parts of Mexico so we have had some experience with what to expect.

We flew out of Calgary so it is about five hours or more from the time you board the plane until you disembark. If you fly with Sky Service I recommend you pre-book seats with extra legroom. That may also apply to other airlines. When we arrived in Cancun we had to wait quite a while to disembark while they searched for an aisle chair even though that was supposedly arranged in advance as well by the airlines. That's Mexico! In my case, they had to carry me off the plane down steps because they don't have the ramps, but that was no problem as they have plenty of people helping. Once we got into the airport we were spotted by staff and moved into a lineup to get through customs that bypass the other long lineups. That was a nice bonus.

As with all of our previous trips to Mexico, we encountered wheelchair accessibility issues with the transfer from the airport to the hotel. For this trip I was using an Esprit power chair that collapses and converts to a manual chair quite easily (although heavy for a manual chair) for traveling purposes. It has a small battery that powers motors in the hub of the wheels. My regular power chair is way too heavy to take on a trip like this and I am not aware of any adapted vehicles available there to transport that kind of chair. In order to be transported to the resort, you cannot load the traditional buses so you need to arrange special transportation in advance through your travel agent, or you can also rent a van at the airport. In my case, Signature Vacations provided the van.

Most Mexican towns and businesses do not have a lot of curb cutaways, so the light weight chair gives me the flexibility to be lifted, with assistance, into awkward places.

We were told in advance that the hotel was built to be wheelchair accessible. We pulled up in front of the hotel after a long day of travel and immediately noticed that it was four steps up into the hotel. There was a ramp but it required that we unload on the street, and since it was raining at the time, the people helping me had to stand in several inches of flowing rainwater. The ramp into the resort was quite steep (as were a number of the ramps in the resort), and not something a person in a wheelchair could negotiate without help.

We checked into our wheelchair accessible room and immediately noticed that the room was built on two levels. The bathroom, closet and main entry area were on one level and there was about a 6 in. step down to the bedroom area. Anybody who would build a wheelchair accessible room on two levels obviously doesn’t understand how wheelchairs work. There was a ramp built but it was a very short ramp and my wheelchair anti-tippers would catch on the ramp when I was trying to go up, so there was no way I was able to get back to the main level without assistance. Some wheelchairs wouldn’t have the same issue but anyone in a wheelchair would need a considerable amount of strength to go up the ramp. As well, the bathroom had no grab bars and it was difficult to access the toilet. We went back to the front desk and were told that there were only four wheelchair accessible rooms in the hotel and they were all the same. We pushed for a resolution and were able to speak to the manager. We showed him the problem in the room and he was able to take us to another room that had a raised, accessible toilet complete with grab bars. He also promised to build a new ramp for us the next day which was done. The changes were enough to allow me the freedom to come and go on my own so after some early anxiety it all worked out. The rest of the resort was fairly accessible, and because it was a smaller resort it was very easy to get everywhere I wanted to go without major exertion. We had previously stayed at a mega resort, so I found this resort much easier to get around in. I needed some assistance to get into the multi-level a la carte restaurants.

Last year we stayed at the Barcelo Maya on the Mayan Riviera. I had taken my manual chair. It is a very nice resort, reasonably accessible, but as it is a mega resort it is a long way to everything. Previous to that we stayed at the Samba Vallarta in Nuevo Vallarta. It is a very small resort, very accessible, and in a very nice location. It would be fine if you are staying for only one week, but if you are staying for two weeks the variety of food might get a little too repetitive.

The Gran Porto Real is a midsize resort compared to others we have stayed at.

The room was a Junior Suite, which was the largest room we have ever had in Mexico. It was a nice room, very clean, with softer beds and plusher towels than we have come to expect in Mexico. The bathroom was large, with a huge roll-in shower equipped with grab bars. It was easy to get under the sink.

The pool was lovely; well situated to catch maximum sun for most of the day. Some days there were not enough lounge chairs to meet demand so it was best to get out early and reserve them. Kids are allowed at this resort so they were quite noisy from time to time. The sister resort (The Royal) across the street is adults-only if you are looking for a quieter place.

The beach area in front of the hotel was beautiful. They have done a good job of repairing the beach after the damage from the hurricane. There were lots of lounge chairs available on the beach. There were a lot of Europeans at this hotel and that meant there was a greater lack of beachwear than we had previously experienced. Parents with impressionable children will want to keep that in mind. At the right edge of the hotel property the beach was pretty much washed away so there were a lot of fishing boats moored there. It was not a detriment though. It was fascinating watching the fishermen return with their catch, and the large fish were very tantalizing for people who like to fish. Playa Del Carmen has a law that does not allow vendors on the beach; a pleasant relief to not regularly be hounded to buy their wares. The beach goes for miles and miles with great footing for walking.

The main food serving area was nicely located close to the pool area. We were on the all-inclusive plan. For a resort this size there was a lot of selection at every meal. The fruit, breads, desserts, coffee and hot chocolate were the highlights, with great selection and taste. For me, the main dishes were good but not great. For the most part I felt the dishes were very North Americanized whereas I would have liked to see more authentic Mexican food. My traveling companions were happier with the food than I was. There was always a lot of selection and you could always find something to meet your needs and desires. Because the dining area was open air, the food tended to cool off quickly on the plate.

At the beach and pool you could find food from late morning until the supper hour. Drink servers regularly came around the pool to take your drink orders.

The specialty restaurants, Mexican and Italian, again I found good but not great, but again my traveling companions enjoyed them a lot more than I.

For the most part the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, especially the dining and beverage staff. The front desk staff was not always the quickest to help or as cooperative as you would expect. There was Internet access in the hotel but it was somewhat temperamental.

Our hotel did make attempts to get us to go visit and upgrade to their sister resort, the Royal, across the street, but we did not find them overly pushy. Some of our party did go check out the Royal, with mixed reviews. The upgrade was not overly expensive but the resort did not have the same Mexican charm; it was more boutique style. It had time-share and permanent residents who were not as friendly as holiday travelers, but it was kid free. Rooms were very similar except each room had a whirlpool tub in the room.

There were some language issues, as per usual, and sometimes they stretched the truth. One Guest Services representative was speaking to us, saying she had worked at the resort for three years, but when we requested something, suddenly it was her first day at the resort and she didn’t know if she would be able to meet our request.

One nice aspect of staying in Playa Del Carmen was the accessibility to the shops and restaurants on 5th Ave. It was a short walk to 5th Ave. and a great way to spend some time people watching and checking out some of the local flavor and products. You do have to be careful with what you buy because if you are looking for something authentic from Mexico, if you check closely the items may not be made in Mexico. There is lots of foreign jewelry.

Overall, we enjoyed our two week stay immensely. We would strongly consider returning to this resort in the future as the issues with accessibility and other concerns were not serious obstacles in the big picture.

Iberostar Del Mar
Paul
Toronto, Canada
January 2007

I'm 49 and am a C5 quadraplegic due to a spinal cord injury. My four travelling companions were guys I grew up with. We have been leaving wives, girlfriends and families at home and getting away for a week or so for the last five years.

I use an electric wheelchair to get around.

We arrived a little late because of heavy rains and a lot of flights were backed up. Still, getting through the airport was painless. We exited the plane to a gangway and took the elevator to the first floor. My chair was in one piece and working, definitely a good start. Two of the five of us got red lights at customs but that only took a few minutes extra. I’d arranged a private van for transfer to the hotel because it is difficult to carry me on and off those big buses. I booked with Anna at Playa.info. The van was a full size Ford. I was lifted into the second row of seats and my chair fit in the back.

The resort grounds are very large. Having stayed at the Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal I knew it would be big, but seeing is believing...including the Lindo and Maya you could easily walk for hours. Not a problem for me :-)

Getting around the entire resort is possible by the pathways shown on the maps. At the T/Q only partial access was possible. At two spots in the T/Q’s jungle there are a couple of steps which means going around the outside of room buildings on the perimeter roads. The inner paths at the T/Q are made with real stones which adds to the atmosphere but makes wheeling much more difficult. The outer roads and paths were much better for smooth rolling. At Paraiso the opposite is the case. The inner paths are much smoother than the outer roads used by the shuttle train and trucks. Those are moulded to look like stone and while they are not as bumpy as real stone, it is uncomfortable to wheel on for any distance. I stayed to the inner paths whenever possible. Of course the lobbies and walkways to the restaurants and show area are tiled marble and are smooth as glass. Perfect to go fast on if you’re in a hurry or just like speed.

Room 4110
Our rooms were actually on the Beach side in building 41 because those were the only wheelchair accessible ones available at the time. No problem. It was pouring rain the night we arrived and the desk guy told me a shortcut through the employees’ areas so that I wouldn’t get soaked.

The room is large enough to wheel about in and after moving the small table and sitting chair aside, turning around is possible as is access to the patio.

The washroom was not what I was expecting. Information I’d gotten off of Signature Vacations website indicated the rooms at Del Mar were “Very limited, on request. Specially designed for people with disabilities or wheelchairs” This distinction may not seem like much but by my past experience at hotels in Cuba and the D.R., a room “specially designed” was ideal. Meaning a very open concept with roll-in shower area, raised toilet seat, wall mounted height adjustable sink, tilted mirror and smaller counter area. The bathroom did indeed have a roll-in shower but it was the same shower as a regular room with the floor step removed. I take my own shower chair with me and it fit in ok.
The sink was mounted in a counter and the front valance was too low to wheel under. The door opened inwards against the sink which meant I had to back in and then back into the shower to be able to close the door and approach the sink. The rooms at the T/Q are described as “On request, however room not designed for people with disabilities and/or wheelchairs.” Theirs were the same as the Del Mar but had had the door hinges changed so that you could get in and close the door easily.
While the bathroom was not ideal and presented some difficulties I was able to manage just fine with some assistance. Everyone is different though and what is fine for me may or may not be suitable for someone else so if anyone wants more info please ask.

Beach
I’d been told by Loreto Lazlo in public relations before arriving that the beach boardwalk was still in the planning stages. So, for the first day on the beach we borrowed enough wood planks from the construction guys (building a new washroom & bar) to get me to the first row of palapas where we made a small deck with the wood in the sun and shade.
A couple days later we discovered there was still a beach boardwalk on the Lindo beach. It went from the bridge to the left to the bar, washroom, around the grill and past the archery location. So from then on we sat there and used a 4x8 sheet of plywood to get into shade. My friends had to walk back to the Beach/Del Mar for drinks and food but that wasn’t a hardship.
Midway through the week construction began on the Del Mar boardwalk starting at the el Faro restaurant side (right by the massage hut) and by Saturday the 11th it reached as far as the beach grill. I was very pleased with this because it gave me complete independence for the whole resort. The best beach access point is the one at the Steakhouse because it isn’t a wooden bridge. The bridges at best are bumpy and the Del Mar one by el Faro is the worst. It is very uneven. Still usable, just don’t try to carry a drink!

Since I was there the beach boardwalk was completed and connects at all the access paths.

Coba & Xel-Ha
On Sunday the 5th we took a private van to see the ruins at Coba and then snorkel at Xel-Ha. It is a 2-hour drive to Coba where they have the tallest pyramid outside of Guatemala....and you can still climb it. Access for me was fair. I could get close to most of the buildings. It was interesting to see and I’m glad I went. The ruins there are only partially excavated so there are lots of trees still that provide shelter from the sun.
My goal at Xel-Ha was to float down the lazy river and try snorkelling. The pathways leading to the bus to the lazy river were no problem. Then I simply rode the road to the start of the river. Here, having 4 strong friends paid off again as they had to carry me down a dozen steps in a two person floating tube to the start of the river. The park staff was very helpful also and had I not had the muscle with me I’m sure they’d have helped. They took my chair back to the lockers in a pickup truck. The river float was fun. I attempted snorkelling at the floating bridge and managed to see some fish but felt less comfortable with it than I had hoped. Oh well, it was still fun.
We didn’t have time to go to the beach there but I noticed a beach chair (a wheelchair with balloon tires that someone would push like a stroller) on the way in. You can probably rent them.

Restaurants
Went to the Mexican, Steakhouse, Mediterranean, Japanese and Italian. Enjoyed them all. The cooking table in the Japanese restaurant has a short shelf around it that is hard to get close to in a wheelchair but if you sit at the corner and take up 2 spaces you can get close enough. Tables in the other restaurants were high enough for me...I need about 27" ground clearance to the lowest part of the table.
(looked Loreto up on day 4 to say hi & thanks for her help via e-mail and she gave us an extra dinner!)
My best meal however was after a day in Playa Del Carmen sitting outside at la Parilla on 5th Ave.. Had the Pibili Chicken. But it was the combination of food, wine, location, company, musicians on the street and warm wind that made it the best.
We took the hotel shuttle bus into town. My chair fit underneath in the luggage compartment but it had to be put on its side.

I’ve been away somewhere for a week to two weeks for the last six years and always to a different place. This year was the first time I returned to the same general location. The Mayan Riviera is the first place I’ve found that provides me the opportunity to easily experience more than just the resort. That doesn’t mean other destinations have nothing to offer, just that in my opinion the Mayan has had the most for me. I think it very possible that I’ll return again. And taking everything into consideration, I wouldn’t hesitate to return to the Del Mar or Tucan/Quetzal.

Please feel free to e-mail me with specific questions about accessibility at
