I was told by a friend of mine, who is from Cleveland and lives here in the DR, that there is a new lunch spot that I simply must check out. Always skeptical of dining out down here, I decided to give it a try after he told me it was an American couple making Dominican food! This I simply gotta see! So I went to Coco Loco, which is a major intersection here in Bavaro and right where they built the new mall, Plaza San Juan. I saw a newly painted Dominican style comida and was greeted by a young Dominican boy who took my order and asked me to sit down and he would bring me my food. By the standards down here, that was already unusual! So I looked in the buffet case, told him what I wanted and sat down to wait. The next thing I know, a tall, thin American comes over with my beer and a glass, welcomes me and says my food will be up shortly. This is Fat Tony??? Doesn't look very fat to me! Then this young Dominican then comes over with a healthy portion of Locrio de Cerdo (Dominican rice with pork), Pica Pollo (Fried chicken), Tostones (fried plantains) and Pan de Coco (coconut bread) which was out of this world! The rice dish was perfect, the chicken was fresh, the bread was soft and tasty and the Tostones were fresh from the fryer. I have been here for 4 years, and I have never had better AUTHENTIC Dominican food like this before, not even on the best of the resorts! My only complaint was that the beer could have been colder, but the Owner told me he was waiting for the Presidente cooler and I know all about Dominican time! I have to admit, this guy and his wife can cook, they understand the word service and they and their wait staff are all over it! As I talked to them, it turns out they are from Philadelphia, they also offer several American dishes, including Philly Cheese Steaks and they have the best fries in town! They just opened this place, and I have already been there twice last week! I ate my first Cheese Steak and lemme tell ya, it is incredible! I sit there and watch Americans, Canadians and Dominicans eat everything on their plates and go back for more! I am a big boy and I can eat, they serve nice healthy portions for a great price and I will keep going back as they keep adding things to the menu. I saw Italian meatballs, sausage, San Cocho, the sweetest looking Aroz Amarilla fresh juice, they are doing it right! His wife Angie is bringing in Banana pudding and Macaroni and Cheese next week! I haven't had that in over 4 years! Fat Tony's rocks!!! They have a facebook campaign going on to get reviews for your site and I give this spot a BIG THUMBS UP! Simply the Best food I have ever had here in the DR! I have never written a review before, but I want these guys to stay here and feed me forever. Tony and his wife Angie are simply the best hosts and cooks in Bavaro and deserve even bigger crowds at lunch than they already have!
I am retired real estate executive living in Villas Bavaro. I try to keep myself low key and just have a good time down here. I have been here for 4 years and I have been living here full time, with the occasional trip back to my hometown of Boston to see my son. I love hanging out, playing Dominoes with the locals and seeing the real Dominican Republic, not just the resort angle. I love the Dominican people, the culture, I speak fluent Spanish and German and I fit in everywhere. Even though I am a bit larger than life for some people, I will always tell you the unvarnished truth. I love it here on the Island, even though I do miss the action sometimes in Boston. But I now have a "Go To" spot to eat good, honest food, without all the tourist trappings or limp, soggy french fries! They have a great location, close to everything, and they know the meaning of the word SERVICE!

We arrived in Punta Cana, for a two week stay, on the 18th with a list of new places we needed to check out. One attraction was Plaza San Juan. When we got there, they were still building many of the stores in the mall, so there wasn't much open yet. My husband, who is Dominican, saw a small restaurant on the corner, that wasn't there last time we came here and what attracted us was the signs were all in English and Spanish, which we have never seen before, so we pulled into the parking lot. We have been to Punta Cana many times and we love to eat good local food, and he usually sniffs out the best spots. Imagine our surprise when we entered Fat Tony's at Coco Loco and were greeted by an American couple who not only serve American specialties but have the best Dominican food we have ever had!!! We had never seen anything like this before! The Dominican food is served buffet style and was simply flying out the door. We dined on San Cocho (which was better than anything in any of the resorts we have stayed in) we sampled the Empanadas (which the owner proudly explained he had made himself), we also had Moro Negro and a wonderful Avacado salad! They made several different kinds of natural juices which were simply amazing, with or without rum! The dining room is open air with a charming cana roof and you can sit and watch the hustle and bustle of the local citizens. The place is immaculate, the staff is warm and friendly, and the couple who owns it take the time to make sure all is well with your service and the owners even bussed our table themselves, as they had a full house of Dominicans and tourists! We have since been back two more times and just yesterday we had the Philly Cheese Steak, which is a sliced fillet with suteed onions and melted cheese on a roll, which I have to admit is making my mouth water at the thought of it right now! It was served with a side of fries, which have to be the best fries on the Island. Everywhere else they are soggy and cold, but here they were golden and crisp! We will be back several more times before we leave, thank God we have another week here! Oh and they also serve breakfast! Real, honest to God breakfast! We tried Mangu for the first time and it was wonderful! If you are like us and love the "Diner" experience, you will love this perfect blend of American Diner and Dominican Comida, it is simply a charming place to start your day of sightseeing or to spend your lunch break!
Fat Tony's at Coco Loco. We also asked why Tony wasn't fat and he told us he was working on it! Everyone has to have a goal!
After eating at many of the tourist spots, we were completely happy with the menu choices here and the quality of the food and the prices were very reasonable! They don't overcharge the tourists and they have the same prices for tourist and Dominican alike! All of the staff is very attentive and they seem to never sit down. If you need anything they are right there with it in hand, which is quite unusual down here. Give this hard working young couple a shot, you will be as surprised as we were with everything! I have even friended them on facebook and I am sure we will keep in touch!
They have only been open a short time, but it seems that this is fast becoming a local hot spot, as we seen a table of 6 Americans hanging out and a table of Dominican businessmen having a working lunch. They do a good take away business as the motos are pulling up and taking away multiple containers constantly. We even saw the employees from Pizza Hut come in to eat! Wouldn't they get free pizza? This was the most friendly dining experience we have ever had here, you almost feel like family!

Been here almost a month, and I have to admit, this is as close to a real Dominican meal as I have ever had! I have gone to peoples houses and they had the same stuff on the meny... here's the catch... the owners of this wonderful local Comida are from Philadelphia!!! I kid you not! Just across from the new mall, sits a little Comida that is painted to look like it is straight from South Philadelphia. What's more, they have the most amazing Dominican food, San Cocho, Moro Aranke, Tostones, Maduro, Aroz Amarillo, Pica Pollo, Roast pork, Ensalada De Conditos and then, another catch, Philly Cheese Steaks! I have family in Philadelphia, and the smell of onions and peppers made me completely starving for more! Now they cook authentic Philly favorites and Authentic Dominican food, they must be Dominican, right? WRONG! Tony is not even Italian and his lovely wife Angelique is African-American!!! I mean, what's up? Either way, this was the best place I have found during my month long stay here! The atmosphere is friendly, the place is so clean, you can eat off the floors, the staff is attentive and the hosts/Chef's are downright amazing! I felt like I was at my home kitchen table waiting for my Mom and Dad to serve me lunch! If you are in the area, you simply MUST stop here! Good fast food at a great price, no tourist prices here! It is like you are family, even if you are a long way from home. I will be back, every day during the rest of my stay!
I was tipped off to this place by overhearing a conversation on the beach, one on the circle in Los Corales and one last week at Danny's Bar during karaoke. I figured if I kept hearing about this place so much, I had better check it out. They are creating a good buzz, based solely on the food alone! Most of the local eateries down here are not worth the pesos it takes to get there. Even if it is cooked by local Dominicans it usually is not very good, certainly not restaurant quality food for sure! This place is tops! American Quality Dominican food... amazing! The place is white from top to bottom and clean as the day is long, the stainless steel gleams here! What a wonderful local hangout... I wish they were open for dinner, but it is a family business and everyone deserves to go home once in a while! Great place, I highly recommend it to everyone who visits Punta Cana!

I can't believe I can actually get a Philly Cheesesteak in the Dominican Republic! And it was FANTASTIC! Thank you Tony and best of luck with your new restaurant. See you next year!
