El Aljibe Information

Restaurant El Aljibe is unique in more than one way. The Original El Ajibe, which chanced its name to “La Luna” for some time, was located near the airport and operated by the family of Sergio Garcia Macias. The government asked Sergio to open a restaurant close to Old Havana and Vedado using the original name and recipes. The new El Ajibe opened in 1995. The capacity grew from 88 to 300 over the years. Sergio is still the Chef while his son; granddaughter and niece also work in this government owned restaurant. Most remarkable is the fact that El Aljibe sells the same dish, based on a recipe of Sergio’s mother, to 90% of its clientele. The all you can eat Pollo Asado (grilled chicken) “El Ajibe” cost 12 CUC per person and comes with rice, black beans, potatoes and a salad. A visit to El Aljibe is almost obligatory for those who love to eat chicken.

A friend and I ate here and this was as far as splurging on dinner as we went for our trip. The service was great and there was a good atmosphere. We ordered 2 of the specials. Each order had two large chicken breasts cooked and covered in an orange-sour-garlic sauce. The meal came with coleslaw, plantain, and rice with and excellent black bean sauce. For dessert I had a creme caramel and my friend had a cappucino. The entire meal was great and the red wine was good. The total came to about 40 pesos for 2 people. There is also a nice gift shop on site. We bought some Cuban coffee to bring home, I had a cup today and it was great. If you are in this area you should eat here
