"Value for money but no toilet seat"

There were a lack of nice hotels available in Santa Clara. At $29 a night including breakfast, this was certainly a cheap price. For the price, I think it was certainly better than it could have been. However we found our toilet with no toilet seat, which was slightly annoying. The airconditioning dripped all night outside of our room, and I am not sure when the floor was last cleaned. I had read reviews that the rooms were small, but again for the price, I wasn't very bothered by this.

The Hotel Santa Clara Libre was clean, centrally located, and overall quite comfortable as long as you're not expected a four-star experience. Service was generally slow and lacklustre (not uncommon in Cuba), although one or two staff members were very friendly and helpful. The bathroom was small and the shower usually provided hot water. A pretty decent breakfast buffet was included. Slept very well and could not hear noise from the discotheque, as some other reviewers had mentioned, perhaps because I was on one of the lower floors (the nightclub I think being on the 11th floor).

Stayed here mid-April and there were plenty of rooms available -- probably no need to book in advance. We stayed an additional night the following week to catch our flight out of Santa Clara, and the rate was lower booking on-site rather than online.

Overall -- this is decidedly a two-star hotel, so as long as you're expecting that, you won't be disappointed. I would stay here again.

Room Number:
508

Arrival:
Took almost 25 minutes to check in (we had already booked the rooms online) -- service was very slow for the clump of people ahead of us. A little bit frustrating.

Rooms:
Small but very clean, fairly reliable hot water. We had front-facing room with a good view of Parque Vidal from the window. Hallway noise could be bothersome if other guests were loud in entering/leaving their rooms, but otherwise very quiet.

Restaurants and Bars:
Great view from the 10th-floor restaurant. Only ate breakfast here (included with nightly rate); like most Cuban food, it was nothing to write home about, but was overall not bad.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The building is historic, complete with revolutionary bullet holes. The tallest building in Santa Clara, so it's easy to find.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
N/A.

Other Comments:
Thank you for a comfortable stay!

Although dated with some issues (no toilet seat, water pressure in toilet, not what a Westerner might expect) the hotel is extremely well located and full of history; even the bullet marks on the outside. My pilgrimmage to Che sites were more complete staying in this hotel. The hotel housed the rebels and is across the main square from Che's headquarters. The main square is lively and the hotel therefore is near to everything the city has to offer. A good view of surrounding area from bar on top floor adds to the moment. It was a memorable visit and stay.

The Santa Clara Libre is an institution in Santa Clara. It is located at the heart of the city and every body knows about it. Rooms are small with two twin beds and an en-suite bathroom. Air-conditioning works fine and hot/cold water is available. However, do not expect a 5 star hotel as this is not. You get what you pay for your money. Be aware that it can be noisy as it is centrally located and several events happen at the Parque Vidal right at the hotel door.

For its very cheap price, this hotel is ok. Don't expect luxury, but it has all necessary facilities, rooms are hygienic and clean and were renovated.
