We had excellent service on our arrival. Got through registration quickly with little trouble.
We were a little disappointed when we got our room as we had requested a king size bed with oceon view but got 2 queen size with a partial view. We were told we could ask to change the next day but found the room was just fine. Clean, and easily accessible to the beach.
The maids that we had were awesome. Always had our fridge filled with water, beer and snacks. They also left beautiful flower arrangements and chocolates in the room. They checked every evening to make sure we had enough towels. The shower was a little hit and miss but this isn't Canada so we take what we get and enjoy it!
Restaurants and Bars:
We only used the main buffet and the beach restaurant. Both had excellent food and service. The main buffet had wonderful breakfasts and exceptional staff. Everyone was always willing to get you anything you asked for.
The grounds, and pool area were always kept clean. We were somewhat disappointed in the beach as there isn't a long beach and we like to go for long walks on the beach. There is quite a slope to the beach so you walk on an angle which is really hard on your back and hips. The sand was always clean and we spent most of our leisure time on the loungers on the raised beach in front of the hotel. Lots of palapas and great drink service.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
Seemed to be a lot of activities for those who wanted them. We enjoyed the music every night in the lobby bar. Wonderful, talented musicians and singers.
It was interesting visiting the little town of La Crucicita. The people were very friendly and helpful. Not a large town but very pretty.
This was one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever taken. Would return again in a second.

My husband and I traveled with my sister and her husband to Huatulco on Tuesday, Feb. 22nd for a one week vacation at the Barcelo. Our tropical Paradise getaway turned into hell very quickly! We’d only been there for two days when my husband got Montezuma’s revenge. Ten hours later, my brother-in-law and I were the next ones to get sick; however, our symptoms also included vomiting.
After two days with no improvement in his condition, my husband and brother-in law finally dragged themselves to the hotel doctor on Saturday morning. The ten minute visit with the doctor cost $120.00 USD. Both men were told that they should have nothing but Gatorade for the next 24 hours in order to replenish electrolytes.
We decided to do a little investigating to find out if any other people staying at the resort were sick.. The resort staff tried very hard to cover the sickness up; however a lot of people were angry and talking amongst themselves. All the people lying around the resort with bottles of Gatorade were a dead giveaway!!
After comparing notes among resort guests, I would estimate that about 30 to 40% of the guests were sick and it appears that the majority began to show symptoms Thursday evening or at some point on Friday.
On Sunday morning I went to talk to our Sunwing representative, James. Five other couples were waiting in line to talk to him and they all expressed the same concerns about this outbreak. He was neither helpful nor sympathetic and all he could tell me was that he would look into it. He seemed to be more interested in trying to pin the illness on people eating off the property.
While waiting to speak with James, I heard horror stories from other couples who were lined up at his desk. One woman had to have the doctor come to her room on Saturday night as she was violently ill. The doctor blatantly lied and told her that only three other people in the hotel were sick. The pharmacy across the street had run out of drugs by Saturday evening and some people had to wait until Sunday morning to get their prescriptions filled.
My sister and I talked to at least thirty groups of guests who were sick or had other members in their group who were sick. Most of these people were Canadians and Americans. In one group of eight people, seven of them had gotten sick.
The hotel definitely made their money off of us as we were unable to enjoy both food and alcohol for the last five days of our vacation.. We have traveled extensively in Mexico and I wish I could say something positive about this vacation but unfortunately these events overshadowed all that Huatulco had to offer. The Barcelo failed miserably in their attempts to “pamper you with an unforgettable Mexico vacation.” Our vacation was unforgettable for all of us but unfortunately, not in a good way!
