Midas Resort Lee & Mike ~ Sarnia, Ontario, Canada

November 2009

Arrival: October 29 - November 8, 2009
This was our third trip to Belize and our first stay at Midas Resort. We chose it based on traveller's reviews and on its proximity to the town center and restaurants, etc. We have also stayed at Windy Hill, Parrot Nest Lodge, Black Rock Lodge and Blue Tang (on Ambergris Caye).

There are 3 large dogs living on the property who act as security. They quickly get to know you and will not bark once they recognize who you are.  They do however bark (day and night) at any strange dogs or people around the resort, so if you are a light sleeper, take ear plugs.

Rooms:
There are different types of rooms - cabins, cabanas and hotel-type rooms. There is a new facility being built with additional guest rooms.  We stayed in Cabana #8 which was raised off the ground and we had no problems with alot of insects (we had a few ants only).  Our room was quaint and decorated with local art, bedspread & curtains.  We had a ceiling fan, air conditioning (we used it only once), lots of screened windows, TV and a 3 piece bathroom with hot water (we did have 1 day when the hot water wasn't working, but it was fixed that day).  Our room was cleaned daily and fresh towels provided (sometimes later in the day, but we did get them).  Only soap is provided, so you will need to bring shampoo, lotion and any other toiletries.  There are no hair dryers in the rooms.

Restaurants and Bars:
There is an outdoor eating & gathering area.  At present, Midas is serving only breakfast.  It offered the basic items - full English breakfast, boiled eggs & toast, etc for a reasonable price (around $7 - 10 BZ dollars)

Water, sodas and beer are available.  All items will be added to your room tab which you pay at the end of your stay.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The grounds are quite large and nicely landscaped.  There is a river at the back of the property, but no access at the time we were there.  The river was quite high (the dam had been opened and there had been quite alot of rain over the time we were there), so it was not advised that you swim in the river.  We would not recommend that you choose this resort if river or swimming is important to you.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
There is a night walk with Thomas around the property. He is very enthusiastic about his job and nature and he will do his best to find sleeping birds, frogs, tree frogs, lizards / chameleons, tarantulas (if you want to see them), termites (you can taste them if you want) and various insects.  Although it started to rain just as we were leaving on our walk, he continued to do his best to search out interesting things for us to see.

There are tours offered from Midas, but we did not go on any because we had done some of them on our previous 2 visits to Belize (we have been to Tikal in Guatemala, Caracol ruins, Xunantunich ruins, Belize Zoo, and to Ambergris Caye for a 4 night stay and we did snorkelling at Hol Chan Marina & Shark Ray Alley)

Other Comments:
Midas Resort is a comfortable and cozy place with very friendly and accomodating staff.  The owner?manager Mike lives on the property and his mother Maria lives close by, so they are very involved in the day to day operation of the hotel. The front desk manager, Dorita, was wonderful in answering all of our inquiries by e-mail before we made our final decision.  We found all of the staff at Midas to be very personable and helpful.

If you are looking for a fancy place to stay with all of the amenities, Midas is not for you.  If you are looking for a clean, comfortable and affordable choice near to town (5 to 10 minutes walk)and you have realistic expectations of accomodations, then we would recommend Midas Rssort.
