| Montehabana - Havana
Location: Havana -Miramar (Playa) Calle 70 e/ 5ta.A y 7ma.A
Aparthotel ( NOT All-inclusive - 88 Full Apartments with kitchen, 76 Standard Rooms, 13 Studio Apartments, One Apartment equipped for the disabled.
Description from brochure: No restaurants. 24hr lobby bar /with snacks available . Safety deposit box. Pool available at Hotel next door. Underground parking. Cybercafe.
I recently lived at the Montehabana for 4 weeks while attending a nearby language school.
Location : The Montehabana is an aparthotel on C 70 a short distance from 5ta Av. It's a long way from any of the 'tourist' attractions in Havana but might be a choice if you wanted a 'base of operations' for Cuba travel.
Operator : Management is by Gaviota, one of the Cuban tourist board management groups.
Rooms : The whole hotel is quite new (Google Earth still shows construction cranes and no landscaping) and one wing had just opened the week I arrived. Many of the rooms are large apartments with fully-equipped kitchens. I had a brand-new apartment equipped with all the appliances and dishes etc. My air-con and safe were not functioning so I was moved to another wing, just as nice but everything working.
The rooms all have safes but there is a refundable $5 CUC deposit and a $2 CUC / day rental fee.
Facilities : There is no pool, and no restaurant. Snacks are available from the small kitchen at the 24 h lobby bar, and guests have the use of the pool at the Hotel Occidental (formerly the Novotel) next door.
There are a number of Mercados, Supermercados and small shops nearby and a Tienda in the hotel where you can buy food to cook for yourself. I had MAP and ate breakfast and dinner at the Occidental. The food was fine, but got very repetitive after 4 weeks. If you are adventurous and have some pesos (CUP or 'moneda nacional') in your pocket you can find small local snack bars for lunches and there are a number of CUC restaurants in the neighbourhood.
There is a CADECA in the hotel, so you can easily obtain CUP but the CUC rate is poor compared to the airport rate. There are banks nearby.
High speed internet is available at $8 CUC /hour although they reduced the terminals from 4 to 2 while I was there.
Surroundings : A large park (Monte Barreto) behind the hotel has a number of surfaced playing areas if you are into handball, tennis, basketball or volleyball.
Getting Around : There is a daily shuttle schedule that will take you as far as Habana Vieja for $5 CUC return. You can (in theory) get on/off as many times as you like if you want to stop at places like Hotel Sevilla or the foot of La Rampa. The same driver is always there, and (surprise) hes very good at recognizing his passengers, and stopping to pick them up.
There is a Gaviota Tour desk and Trans Gaviota car rental in the hotel lobby.
