| Pelican Reef Villas Resort || Greg ~ San Diego|
This was our first time to Belize. We researched a lot of different places before deciding on Pelican Reef. We have four kids ranging in age from 6 months old to 12 years. I'll admit that before we came I was a little nervous and wondering if we were being a little too crazy. As we took the taxi from the airport to Pelican Reef, I remember passing a few places and thinking, "we thought about booking that hotel and it does not look nearly as nice as the pictures...." We were concerned about what we would find at Pelican Reef. We were tremendously pleased by how nice the place was and how great the people are.
Pelican Reef consists of four buildings, so it is a fairly small property. I was surprised how many employees worked there considering the size of the property. The maid service comes daily. They did the dishes, made the beds, and put out fresh towels (all included in the daily rate). The friendly staff seemed to be constantly grooming the grounds (stopping occassionally to cut open a coconut for one of my kids).
Each villa appears to be owned individually but managed by the same company. We stayed there with two other families so we saw the inside of three different villas. They all had small differences in decorations, but they were all first class. They all have central air, washer / dryer, plenty of dishes (we cooked quite a bit). The set up reminds me of a Marriott villa (i.e. there is plenty of space, a full kitchen, a dining room table etc.) but the Pelican Reef has nicer furnishings.
We had the groceries delivered to our villas with Langiappe. (We were not sure if the water was good, so we bought a ton of water. It turns out that the water in the villas is good, so we had a bunch of extra water...)
The managers and owners live on site. They got to know us and were always looking for ways to make this fun for us and the kids.
We had a good time exploring in their kayaks (complimentary) and the bikes (also complimentary).
I highly recommend doing an excursion with Oliver on the Cari'Bean. He was entertaining and knows what he is doing. We had the best time with him when we just told him to take us wherever he thought would be the best fit for our group. You may need to reserve farther in advance for him because he books up quick. He is best for a day of exploring. If you are going to Hol Chan, anybody can take you there.

I actually found Pelican Reef through searching TripAdvisor and I have to say, we had a wonderful time for a long "girls weekend getaway." The resort was just gorgeous. The room, the pool and bar area, the beach -- all very clean and well kept. The staff, especially Cesar and Eliazar, were very helpful. They assisted us with restaurant reservations, excursion bookings (ziplining, cave-tubing, and swimming with sharks and stingrays), and just keeping the rum coming!
Some reviewers didn't like the location but we loved being "at the end of the island" since this made watching the sunrise very peaceful and we could come back to peace and tranquility after hitting town for dinner and whatever. The golfcart rental was a must, though, because it is about a 15-20 minute (cart) ride into town. Thanks to Lori and Greg when we made our reservations for handling the golfcart rental as well as the short flight from Belize International to San Pedro airport.
Some reviewers have been unhappy with the lack of "true restaurant facilities" on the premises. We were perfectly happy with our breakfast sandwiches to get our day started and the somewhat limited menu for breakfast and lunch was not a problem for us since we were around about for most of our days.
All in all, if this isn't THE best place to stay on the island, I can't imagine what is. That said, don't tell anyone -- I want to be able to get reservations there when I'm ready to go back!
Thanks to the whole crew for a great job taking care of us from start to finish.
