Anchorage Hotel and Dive Centre

October 2005
I stayed at the Anchorage Hotel and Dive Centre for two nights in August 2005 for business. As this was my first time to Dominica I didn't know what to expect. The hotel is small about 32 rooms and caters to scuba divers. The staff were all very friendly, but I would not go back as the hotel is very run down and amenities were not the greatest. The room was very basic but looked to be clean. The water pressure in the shower was awful. There was more water pressure coming out of my tap. As I had an early flight out the second morning, I was up and in the shower at 3:30 am. No one except for my colleague two doors over was probably up at that time and the water pressure was a drip. I literally had to put my head against the wall to rinse out my hair. I tried to turn on the television at one point and the plug sparked and would not turn on. Needless to say I didn't try again, and didn't watch any TV. I had a room with a balcony which looked out over the water, but be aware there are no beaches in Roseau. I did go swimming at night in the pool. When I woke up in the morning and saw it during the daylight, I was shocked that I really went in. The water was murky and almost green. I tried to make a phone call home, but my phone would not make outgoing calls. When I asked the front desk about it, they didn't know, so I had to go to the front desk whenever I wanted to make a phone call.

The second night there, my colleague and I decided to walk to a hotel down the street for dinner. It was about a 20 minute walk and it was dark, but no one really bothered us. It is a very safe country with a very low crime rate. The hotel we ate at was Fort Young. Just walking in there seemed so much nicer than our hotel. The meal was great. A little pricey for what you would expect in Dominica, but the restaurant overlooking the water was beautiful. We inquired about the rates and they were actually about $10 cheaper than the Anchorage. Upon returning to work, I advised our travel agency about the hotel and we will be staying there on future business.
