Stonefield Estate Villa Resort

Stonefield Estate Villa Resort —
Location: 45 min to UVF Arpt.
19 rooms
Description from resort website: Nestled on a lush hillside by the sea, this romantic resort comprises six older stone cottages and five newer multicolored villas in vivid hues of candy pink, deep-sea blue, teal, turquoise and yellow that ooze West Indian charm. Nature lovers and escapists can hide away here, free of the crowds and commotion commonly found at larger St. Lucian resorts. A small open-sided villa with lacy white trim functions as the lobby. From here, guests descend a steep road to the pool, where a flagstone deck juts out over the edge of a cliff. The views are exquisite.

Arrival October 2006:
Arrival was fine, no problems.  Van was waiting for us to take us to the resort.  Typical Caribbean drive (winding roads, bumpy.)

Rooms:
We stayed in the Frangipani villa, which is the best villa because it is the most private.  The pool is large, kidney shaped (much larger than we expected for a plunge pool).  The room is furnished in Caribbean style (brightly coloured bedspreads and wood slat blinds, dark bamboo/ teak furniture etc.
"Open air" villa with screened windows and door but no insect problems; bed has a mosquito net which adds to the ambience!  The outdoor shower was idyllic- when else in your life can you wash your hair and look at this amazing scenery!?

Restaurants and Bars:
The restaurant has delicious fare for all meals, particularly dinner.  I would say lunch was the weakest point of the day.  We had the most expensive ham sandwich I've ever eaten and it wasn't THAT great!  For dinner they have great fresh fish dishes and we were always pleased with the meals.  Breakfast featured a delicious basket of freshly baked croissants and little muffins. When we went they did not have a meal plan, so it is a bit of a hassle to sign for all the food and be "conscious" of the prices, but since our visit they have implemented a meal plan.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
Beach was not easily accessible from the villas.  If anything, it was a steep walk down a couple hundred stairs.  We did not attempt this but we enjoyed the incredible sunsets from our plunge pool overlooking Petit Piton and the ocean.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
We went to the fish fry on Friday night, but it was very rainy so I think it dampered the party.  We walked into town one day and poked around- a quiet fishing village so not really much to do/ see.  We took the shuttle to the beach at Jalousie one day-- imported white sand!  Decent snorkelling.  We didn't go on other tours- our objective was to relax and enjoy our honeymoon!

Other Comments:

Since visiting Stonefield we have gone back to our usual all-inclusives at places like Sandals, but we always talk about Stonefield and how nothing else seems to measure up in terms of seclusion, privacy, and relaxation with your own plunge pool overlooking the ocean.  It was a wonderful honeymoon and we would refer friends and family to Stonefield.

May 2009

Arrival: February 2009

Rooms:
Dark and depressing

Restaurants and Bars:
Dinner was good. Breakfast was unsatisfactory.

Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The pool was the size of a bathtub. Grounds were attractive.

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
No -- I fractured my toe on a dangerous outdoor shower.

Other Comments:
We were booked at Stonefield Estate for a week in Feb. 2009. On our first full day there, I went out to the outdoor shower and fractured my toe on a poorly designed step that had no painted marking to indicate caution. There was also no warning on the door leading out to the shower. We left the next day after seeing a doctor the hotel called in. In order to try to recover some of our original return flight I needed a fax from the doctor. I not only telephoned him and the hotel (including the manager and assistant manager) a total of 10 times - I also faxed the doctor, each time explaining what I needed. I finally got the fax a month later. My telephone bill for these calls came to $300. I emailed the hotel and requested that they refund us one night's stay to compensate for their house doctor's -- and their --failure to send the information promptly. I have heard nothing back from the hotel. Needless to say, if we return to St Lucia, which is a beautiful island from the little we saw, we will stay elsewhere.
